2012 Chevrolet Sonic

2012 Chevrolet Sonic - Click above for high-res image gallery

When the Ford Fiesta first touched down in 2010, the model seemed doomed to follow in the footsteps of the American compact cars that had gone before it. Through December of that year, sales of the smallest member of the Blue Oval family failed to crest more than 4,000 units per month. Despite a pandemic marketing campaign and healthy buzz ahead of the vehicle's launch, production delays and tolerable gas prices did little to help usher the models off of dealer lots. But as fuel prices inch ever skyward, the littlest Blue Oval has begun gaining traction. In May alone, 7,120 Fiesta units leapt off of lots. Even more importantly, the tiny cars carried a higher average transaction price than the Ford Focus, Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla - all substantially larger vehicles.

With the little Ford poised for some big numbers this year, it's clear that U.S. buyers are embracing domestic small cars like they haven't done in ages. General Motors is understandably keen to prove that it, too, can build a B-segment contender. The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic is the company's latest effort in the category. As the successor to the egregiously disappointing Aveo, the Sonic needs to prove that GM can do more than unload Korean hatches at the dock. We took to the wheel of a few pre-production models in Indianapolis, Indiana to see how the effort is coming along.Continue reading 2012 Chevrolet Sonic

It's better then the Aveo, but the Cruze is better then the Cobalt (according to most). Chevy seems to benchmark thier own previous generation rather then the best of the competition. Plus, they don't even have the best Korean compact or subcompact.

I'll wait for the VW Polo GTI or Fiesta ST.

I like the sedan version of the Sonic more. The hatchback just looks a little awkward with its nose-heavy design. Although I probably still wouldn't own one. I'm just not happy with GM's tendency to be rebadge-happy, and in letting America be the last country to get any of its new cars.

I'm dying to see the VW Polo here in the US too. It would definitely give the Fiesta some serious competition. Those who loved the original Mk1 Golf/GTI will feel right at home with the size of the new Polo. Here's a taste of what the previous generation Polo GTI could do... ;-)

The car looks confused. Huge leap over the crapveo but it looks like a kia soul assend with a chevy uplanderish front end with dodge charger headlights.

Oh wow...it does kind of look like an Uplander. I see millions of those everyday. The mail carriers drive them. Even seen several police uplanders. It's ridiculous, but anyway the Sonic looks...ok. If it is better than the aveo than it's already ahead. BUT it needs to be better than the competition.

Yeah my gf has a 09 Go-veo..

I've read about this car and they say is this quite a up grade for the Go-veo.

Then again, mounting a Chainsaw motor to a garbage can on wheels would be an upgrade over that car.

I hate that car.

i like it. im willing to give it a shot. i like the interior and the styling outside. that engine sounds like itll be a lot of fun in this smaller application as its only adequate in the 3500 pound chevy cruze. would like to see what it dows hooked up to a 6 speed manual.

i dont understand for the life of me why auto makers try to fool with the gauge setup in cars, leave the damned thing alone! a traditional gauge setup with real dials and needles would have been perfectly fine, but no... we gotta reinvent the wheel when no one asked us to!

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released an announcement on Friday.
That's more of a quality control issue(someone not checking the vehicles properly). Even then the link provided doesn't show the cars being recalled.

That being said I'm willing to give the Sonic the benefit of a doubt. Nobody else brought us a entry level turbocharged subcompact built here in the U.S.
(are you listening Ford, hello?), especially one with a 6-speed manual option. When the New England Auto Show arrives in Boston January 12th thru the 16th I'll check it out.
