Motor Trend Comparison test

Elantra 1st. Focus 5th.

They didn't like the auto.
Doesn't phase me, I'm waiting on an ST anyway.
Not that I'd pay much attention to a MT review in the first place.

These comparisons may be tainted slightly. Looks like Hun-die pays more
advertising dollars to Motor Trend than Ford and the others.

Car & Driver comparison was just the opposite. Focus first, Hun-Die last.
They tested Focus against Chevy Cruise, VW Jetta, Mazda 3, and Elantra.

I say, you go and test drive each one for yourself, which ever one makes
you happy, buy that one. Fooiey on the car magazines.

These comparisons are such BS. So everyone else rates the Focus first and the incompetents are Motor Trend rate it last. They're idiots.

You guys really never saw it coming - that a Hyundai car is deemed the best car in the compact car segment???

Sooner or later it was bound to happen.

Me thinks Focus should had been named #2.

MotorTrend has never been about performance and handling in the 1st place. That's Car and Driver's focus.

I also noticed that Motortrend went out of the way to mention the Hyundai Elantra when it reviewed the 2012 Focus which I thought was a little odd especially when they kind of mentioned it out of thin air. Although everything they said about the Focus last night was positive. Also saw another review of the above six cars in addition to Car & Driver where Focus came in first and Hyundai came in third out of the group. Forget who did the review but it was based on driving between different micro breweries in the six different models. After watching the video it makes me wonder since they call the transmission klunky on the Titanium but on MotorTrend last night during their test of the Titanium they said the transmission was smooth and flawless.

Yeah this comparo was weird, ostensibly I think the rankings were explained because they were going by what "normal" people would want (which I think is a pretty dumb route for them to take - this is Motor Trend, not Consumer Reports) but like Crazy Dave said I wouldn't be surprised if ad dollars are talking here.

And all this complaining about the Powershift is a bit odd to me, as I've driven Powershift Fords 3 times and had a clunky shift like, once. Otherwise I didn't notice it at all - I'm wondering if they're complaining because they were driving more aggressively, but this is supposed to be a comparison for normal people, no? ;)

As for the Elantra, it's a great small car and I don't have an issue with it winning, I just think the Focus should have at least ranked just behind it. They also said the Elantra was the most quiet and grown-up car - seriously? For real? When everyone else says the Elantra is, in comparison to the Focus and Cruze, noisy and insubstantial? If that's not advertising $$...

So contrasting this review with their initial drive of the Focus (where they praised both transmissions) and seeing the contrast with other Focus reviews, and seeing how often this opinion flip-flopping happens elsewhere, just reinforces how fickle and worthless most of the opinions of these journalists are. Stick to Consumer Reports to make sure the car doesn't explode or flip over and leave the subjective assessments for yourself to decide.

IMO, Motor Trend has always had a distorted view of the automotive world. Their "test results" rarely match my opinion of various cars.

I find it hilarious that MT rated the Mazda 3 which is based on the "old" platform higher than the "new" Focus. Wouldn't that mean they stepped backwards instead of moved forwards?

Also I don't think they really understand much outside of advertising dollars. MT has gotten worse over the years, I stopped my subscription 3 years ago.

My personal votes would have gone as follows:
1. Focus
2. Cruze
3. Elantra
4. Jetta
5. 3
6. Civic
7. Corolla
8. Sentra

As an owner of the 2012 Focus with the 6 speed powershift automatic, I can tell when I read this article there is much bias against Ford. When the car is driven slowly it's the only time you can tell it's an automated manual. As a manual transmission enthusiast, I understand the mechnanics of what is happening behind the scenes, so I think some of the comments about it being rough from idle (essentialy it goes into neutral) and first gear are normal and inherent to a manual transmission. Most of the time this transmission is very smooth, and the shifts are very fast. Also, the comments about chattering at low speed is normal until the clutches wear in. Mine has just turned 1,000 miles and has smoothed out considerably. These press cars are beat on and are driven very hard, so take it with a grain of salt.

This is the first time I have heard someone bash a car for "too good of tires" what a joke MT has become.

And "goofy" styling? OK guys lay off the drugs. You don't have to look further than the Hundai Elantra to come up with that comment.
