Focus' Competition

Which comparable cars did you SERIOUSLY consider getting while shopping for your new Focus? And why did you not choose those cars in the end?

98-02 VW Jetta 2.0
99.5-02 Jetta 1.8T

Reason for not getting a Jetta...Expensive everything, insurance, parts and previous bad vw experience when I had a passat. Focus parts are plentiful, cheap and insurance is awesome.

2010 Challenger - w/ 16 city, 23 hwy...just couldn't do it (& already have a '71).
2010 Volvo C30 - too expensive (parts, upkeep etc...)
2011 Honda CRZ - I need a backseat
2010 Prius - Can't stand Toyota's overly sensitive braking

2012 Honda Civic - have not test drove yet.
But have not decided on a purchase yet, leaning to the Focus so far.

2011 Honda CRZ
*Lacked some of the tech goodies (Intelligent key, Moonroof, Touch Screen, Good BT Sync system, Nav)
* The exterior.. I'm not terribly old.. (26), but even to me it looks like something i'd see driven by a 20 year old , hanging out in a Tim Hortons parking lot.

2011 Golf TDI
*Gadgets lacking (Intelligent Key, had issues getting my phone to sync)
*After talking to 4 different VW dealers, the best trade in I could get was $1700 less than the ford dealership was offering. Combine this with a starting price already $4.5k over a fully loaded Titanium, and it starts to add up.
*New Model coming out next year (Would probably be kicking myself if the new model had the features I thought were lacking from the current version)
*Maintenance and Part prices

Lexus CT200H

*Price ($40k and still lacking some of the options that the focus had)
*Stereo BT system was iffy (What can I say, i like to play music from my phone)
*While nice to drive, lacked a lot of sportiness due to the weight and power train
*Transmission. I was trying to get away from the CVT in my Sentra.
*Maint/repair costs. While it is a very dependable car.. only Lexus/Toyota could really work on it.

Fiesta
*I really disliked that little red screen. Had it been similar to the higher contrast one in the focus (without myford touch), I would have been fine with it
*Cup holders. I usually carry around my Contigo water bottle, and it would not fit in them
*Rearview was somewhat obscured in the hatch, so it was begging for a reverse camera (I park in mostly underground parking, downtown Toronto)

Shame, cause otherwise I really liked the fiesta, especially the size.
I did not consider any cars that did not have hatchbacks.

2008 SRT4 Caliber, 2008 Volvo C30, and a 2006 BMW X5 6mt, all of these were around $20k. We then started thinking that for $20k we could just buy a new car. Then I remembered that the Focus was redesigned for 2012, so we built one on Fords website with everything we wanted and it was barely more than the used cars we were considering. We've always bought used, but the new Focus seemed perfect for us... can't wait for it to get here!

Is their anything compatible? Haha!

Ford Fiesta, but it was released too late last year.
Audi A3, Expensive and premium fuel.
Volvo C30, Expensive...at least in Canada. 27k US or 40k CND.
Mini Cooper S, Expensive...at least in Canada. 29k US or 40k+ CND.
VW Gold GTI, Very bland!

When replacing our 2005 Explorer, these are the two we drove but didn't pick over the Focus:
  • 2011 Escape XLS - This model featured the I-4 and 4WD, and I liked that it didn't have a roof rack. The dash had a textured pattern molded into it that I couldn't get past (it looked cheap in our opinion). Higher end models had the same dash.
  • 2012 F-150 - This bad-boy featured the Eco-Boost, in a Crew Cab. That truck pulled like a mo-fo! The turbo V6 produces amazing low-end torque that made me want to pull out my checkbook before we got back to the dealer. The fact that it was twice the price of a Focus and still got cruddy (IMO) mpg's made our decision easier.

Not regrets buying the Focus!

2011 Nissan Juke - cute little car but back seat was too little for even my toddlers. Premium fuel requirement was also a deal killer.

2011 Honda Fit - didn't love the driving experience, felt to much like a little car with a little engine. Also offered very little storage in the back.

2011 Ford Fusion - nice car but it felt too boring for my mid-30s taste. Also seemed to have less head room for the driver than the Focus. For the $$ the Focus made more sense.

2011 Ford Fiesta - it's just to small, hated the red LED infotainment screen straight out of 1985.

Why the Focus? I got just about every bell and whistle I wanted on the inside plus what I feel is a safe/reliable engine with better than expected MPG. I'm not comfortable having to count on Ford to fix the MFT issues, paying customers should not be beta testers. If I get burned on MFT I'll be trading this Focus in sooner rather than later.

2011 VW GTI 5-dr
-premium fuel and less mpg
-downgraded their radio/nav to a 5" screen and increased their price
-however, I love that 2.0T
-no MFT

2012 Honda Civic
-After actually seeing the 9th gen Civic...bleh, nothing new, certainly nothing exciting.
-no MFT

2011 Audi A3
-premium fuel and less mpg
-too much of price premium over the Focus for what you get
-no MFT

2011 Toyota Prius
-Too much money right now, with Toyota producing less cars, Prii are being sold at or near MSRP, and a comparably equipped Prius would be about $5k-$6k more expensive
-It would take too long to recoup gas savings over initial price
-not fun to drive
-no MFT

2011 Dodge Charger R/T
-Horrible mpg
-wife said NO
-would have been defriended by my Prius driving friends
-no MFT
