2000 Focus Engine

I recently had idling issues with my Focus with 120K miles. Diagnostic tests recommended changing an engine coil which the shop mechanics did. They also tuned the car. It still had idling issues so we ran cleaners thru the system twice to clean up a suspected carbon build up with. The car still idled harshly but after a few drives on the highway ran great for about 1.5 months. We thought this knocked out any residual carbon build up. Last week, the engine stalled at a light and never restarted. Turning the key brought a clicking noise from the engine.

The mechanics said it was mechanical failure inside the engine. The only way to get an exact idea of the problem was to get in the engine which would didn't seem cost effective. The car having a blue book value of $2500 at best, it's been recommended to scrap the car.
Question...Should the mechanics have seen this coming? I feel they were fair and this was just bad luck but my friends are wondering what is up. Thoughts?

I think you need to find another mechanic. "Carbon Buildup" - haven't heard of that since the days of leaded gasoline, etc.

Your idle problem was most likley a problem with the IAC (idle air contol).

When you say the engine just clicks do you mean that when you turn the key all you get is a "click" and the engine doesn't try to turn over. If so I would have the battery checked and if it is OK then check the starter.
