2012 - Review of my first 1000 miles...

Well, my new Focus went over 1000 miles on the way to work this morning, so I thought I'd post my comments:

Car details: 2012 Kona Blue Focus SE Hatchback AT w/ Sport and Convenience Packages

Pros:

- Handling. The way this thing handles impresses me more and more each day. My previous car was a S2000. I know I'll probably get flamed for this, but I'm pretty sure if I threw a set of Z-rated summer tires on my Focus the handling wouldn't be too far off from my old S. Electric power steering feel/feedback is right up there with the S2000 as well. I am an experienced autocrosser, so I feel I am somewhat qualified to make these claims. Can't wait to go hit some cones with the new Focus soon.

- Seats. Love the sport seats. Very comfortable and supportive.

- Gas Mileage. Been getting 29 MPG on my DC rush hour commute. Took a road trip this past weekend and got 34 MPG doing ~75 MPH.

- Paint color/appearance. I get lots of looks and compliments on the car. People are very surprised to hear it's a Focus. Love the Kona Blue Paint when the sun's hitting it.

- Ride quality/road noise. Really enjoying how smooth and quiet the car is...especially for how well it handles. Totally BMW-esque (or better).

- Engine. Smooth, quiet, and plenty of power throughout the powerband.

- Transmission. Shifts quickly and precisely. Select shift is great for mountain driving. Looking forward to seeing how "S" mode works at autocross with how it automatically downshifts under braking.

Cons:

- No rear floormats. Really Ford? Haven't been able to find them for sale on the internet yet either.

- Wish I had gotten the 6-speaker stereo. The base 4 speaker sounds pretty good, but is weak on the highs. Also, the jumps between the volume settings are too far apart. (i.e. 7 is much louder than 6)

- Center console sticks out too far into driver's legroom area, and the corner of the plastic has a bit of a sharp edge on it which digs into my knee when I'm wearing shorts.

- Armrest. The armrest needs to be about an inch longer. I think the bigger side bolsters on the sport seats prevent me from getting my arm comfortably situated on the armrest.

- Transmission. In "D", the tranny is hesitant to downshift at times unless I really stomp on the gas....this is probably making me use more gas than it saves.

Overall: Really, really impressed and I look forward to driving it every time I get in. An absolutely great car which I'd highly recommend to anyone.

Great! Do you find a "clunk" or "hollow" noise when rolling off a curb or taking a corner with bumps. I've had mine in and they tell me everything is tight.

Thanks for the comments. We've had ours almost three weeks, and the odometer is just shy of 2K miles. Like you, the more I drive the car the more I like it. I took it over the weekend on a trip to Cleveland, and while on the PA Turnpike I got caught in heavy rain. With the cruise control set at 60mph (under the limit), I hit some standing water. The fully active traction control system engaged and slowed the car down. VERY NICE!

Please don't drive in 'heavy' rain with the cruise on. I had a very good friend who totaled his SUV and almost died in a single car spin out doing that. Once you start to hydroplane I doubt anything will help. Sorry for 'rant' just think twice when its raining.

Great post

Coming from the S2000, you probably pay more attention to a car's power bad, than many drivers do. How do you feel about the focus' power band? What is the torque curve like?

thanks

Edit- oh, I see you said it was "fine". OK

Steve, you are correct about not using the cruise control in those circumstances. I was lured into complacency because the rain had practically stopped, but the water hadn't run off the road yet.

FocusSTHopeful, in my experience I will say that the engine pulls fairly well above 3500 RPM's, and my auto shifted right at 6500 RPM's when I was at the dragstrip.

[yes, I actually raced my Focus when I was in Cleveland. I posted a thread in the drag race section]

Hawk...,

Good report on your Focus.

For floor mats, try a car wash. They usually accumulate extras.
Maybe when people are unable to pay their bill or something.
I found a pair (from a ???) that was a very close black to the
stock rears and were larger which I liked.
Not expensive either.

Hope this helps.

Further on the floor mats:

Under "minor details" on my Etis report, my Titanium does come with "rear floor carpet mats." In other words, anyone who got an SE should be able to grab a pair of OEM 2012 Focus rear floor mats. I haven't checked yet, but the ford accessories website might be a good place to start.
