Funny- I use a '06 Jetta TDI as my work car- just turned 300,000 miles on it. And I ordered a 2012 Focus as a possible replacement but it might just end up being my wife's car. Operating costs over the long term on these cars I expect to be about equal. I do all the maintenance my self and I get 45mpg like clockwork. Oil changes cost under $30. I change the fuel filter at 2x the recomended interval 40k and have never had a problem.

The trouble with the VW is two fold- First the dealer network and service support is the worst in the world. Second- the cars are not that reliable. The PD series engines have camshaft problems- they fail anywhere from 70K on up. Mine made it to 234,000 miles. The dual mass flywheels fail. Mine went at 205,000 but many go way before that. The new CR diesels have a high pressure fuel pump problem which the dealers refuse to cover under warranty blaming bad fuel and is a huge repair bill- often $6K+.

So would I buy a Diesel Focus? Absolutely yes. It can't be worse than the VW! I like 600mile range per tank and the turbo diesels are torquey motors that are fun to drive.

I don't think I would ever own a diesel vehicle. Not with gas/diesel prices, and not with this economy.
