Checking for a rollback

Hey, I just had some tranny and engine work done by a new mechanic, and he tells me that he thinks the 94K on the odometer might be too low. He thinks the instrument panel may have crapped out and been replaced. Yet, there's no asterisk on the digital OD, CarFax was clean, etc. How can I have the actual mileage checked on this engine. It's been six years since I bought the car - is there any recourse if I bought a rolled back car?

radiocarbon dating.

In all seriousness, can't you traceback the mileage on the previous registration papers? Did they not give them to you?

45K and yes, the mileage progression looks fine on the registration and Carfax cleared it at the time of purchase. The mechanic thinks that these cars can have mileage manipulated by trading out the instrument clusters, because the mileage is kept in a chip on the cluster only. But he's not sure.

If the progression looks fine then I don't understand how they could have changed the instrument cluster with a lower mileage one.

How many owners has it had?

I don't unnerstand.

Progression:
10,234 -- 36,767 -- 20,432 -- 45,549

I'm the third owner and the mechanic thinks there's evidence of a cluster replacement. I've never replaced it, hence the issue. I find the notion disquieting, because it's been a horrible car - more time in the shop than out - and I'd like to trade it with some peace of mind.

yes the cluster can be replaced and the mileage changes with that and there is nothing you can do about it

So he's right, then? The mileage is in the chip on the cluster only?

Sigh. Well, that car's a disaster. This is just the icing on the cake.
