Ford, seeking flawless Focus launch, road tests first cars off line

Ford is determined that its 2012 redesigned Focus will be flawless out of the gate.

The automaker has been road testing the first Focus units built near Detroit for 30 miles before shipping them to dealerships nationwide.
For the first batch, Ford took the cars to a Dearborn test track where drivers assessed them for 30 miles each, Ford spokesman Said Deep said. The cars were then taken back to the Wayne plant for more inspection before being shipped to dealers. The Focus went on sale this month.

Jim Hall, managing director of 2953 Analystics, a consulting firm in suburban Detroit, said such extensive testing is more commonly done on high-end cars.

Ford officials told members of the Ford National Dealer Council it was road testing each Focus to ensure a "flawless launch," says a dealer who attended the council's meeting last week in Dearborn and asked to remain anonymous.

"We asked, 'Is there a problem?' They said, 'No. But this is such an important launch and with gas prices rising, having this 40-mpg car launched now is perfect timing for us.' They don't want any problems," the dealer said.

Some dealers have received the Focus, but many are not due to take initial delivery until next month, dealers said.

I guess that's a good thing and may explain the delay in non-MyFord Touch optioned cars.

Posted via FF Mobile Thats great news. Btw people check out the underside of the car. Damn that exhaust looks restrictive. Look at that massive muffler in the back, then alittle ways up you got a resonator, then further up it looks like you got another one, unless its a cat. You should also be shedding some weight with an aftermarket exhaust too, that muffler has to weight a decent amount.

You forgot to see the bright side- easy dual exhaust for people who want it. Finding a dual outlet muffler to fit and work in that location shouldn't be very hard. Also that massive muffler might be an unfilled chamber design. When the original FM's came out, they were massive, nothing like the modern versions. Those mufflers increased power and decreased sound at the same time- on race cars. Their ads used to read "More power than straight pipes!", and they had the dynos to prove it. FM still sells them, but those are the more expensive mufflers. Most people just get the name and stickers to show it when getting the typical 2 chamber mufflers you hear on trucks everywhere.

Also, that doesn't look like a control blade rear suspension to me.

That girl working on the car might not be too bad looking either- can we have a swimsuit day at Dearborn? No wait, bad image in my head of the rest of the team.

Interesting insight though:

"Porsche does it to every car they build," Hall said. "It's unprecedented for this road testing to be done on an entry-level vehicle and it's genuinely puzzling. Is this the way to make sure you have a painless launch and that molding won't fall off in 500 miles?

"It's impressive, but it indicates there might be other issues they're not talking about."

Dear Ford:

Tell you what. I'll take one of the road-tested vehicles at a $10,000 discount because it's now a used car. LMK.

I would have no problem with Ford testing my car when it's built. Good QC and no, I wouldn't expect a discount. They did this with some new Birds back in 02 and they posted it on the sticker that "This Car was Tested Before Delivery."
