To Turbo or Not?

I am not much of a car nut and am just learning the ropes of repairs, servicing, and modifying my car. I am looking to improve my overall mileage and performance. The annoyance I am having is that my Ford Focus just doesnít have the power I need. A simple cruise control setting of 75 mph will get a single person from point A to point B. But, if you factor in a simple wind gust to the front the car will jump in RPMs and try to stay at 75 on the same simple freeway. Add another person and you will see jumps in RPMs over and over, the car sucks as a multi-person transit vehicle. So my solution is to do the simple things to boost itís little power I can get out of it like adding a better air filter, use pure synthetic oils, and ensure the tires are inflated.

So, from your perspective would adding/investing in a good turbo help at all? Would it be worth it? What kind of gains would I get out of it?

Went thru the same things you were and obviously from my sig, I went turbo and boy is it sweet A few things to consider though. You cant really just drop a turbo in your car and go. You will have to upgrade things like the exhaust, clutch/flywheel, tires, brakes and suspension. I have put about $10k into my Focus. If you are prepared to do that, go for it. If you just want a little more power, try I/E/T first and see what you think. Even that 20-25hp bump makes a noticeable difference and its much cheaper.

Thanks for the feed back. I am not that eager to upgrade and put in $10,000, might at as well just get a new car at that point. You said I/E/T, what did you mean by that?

try basic bolt on's first. Like a 2.5 catback exhaust, a cold air intake or short ram or even better a K&N drop in filter will do wonders. IF that wasn't enough jump up to a custom N/A tune. that will really WAKE up your car.

Keep searching around the forums for a bit to see what to buy first. If you still aren't happy with your car then keep an eye for a used turbo kit.
