Unhappy New cars don't excite me anymore

This may piss some of you off, as I take shots at a bunch of vehicles. I remember when I was a young lad (note: I'm 27 now, take that how you will) and I would clamber to the news stand for the latest magazine about whats coming next year, especially the specialty models. But, sadly, there is nothing out there that excites me anymore. I'm not sure if it's because I'm not in the same place I was when I was younger, or if it's because there really isn't a car manufactured today that suits both my wants and needs.
I came to this revalation when I got my Focus SVT. Previously I had only driven RWD muscle cars and I was single, but wanted to get something that handled better and wasn't so hard on my wallet, and would be good in the snow. According to every article I've read, the vast majority of people can't discern which wheels are driving the car, however, aparently I am one of the people who can. But, I bought the car, enjoyed it for a while, then just started to really not like it, and eventually sold it.
I really liked the chasis on dry pavement, I really liked the Recarros (EAP) I really liked the butt warmers, I really liked the brakes. But all of these items added together couldn't overcome what I didn't like about the car. Lack of power, FWD with open differential, understeer, and it was shite in the snow. I put winter tires on it, I drove slow, but no matter what, it just wasn't up to Vermont winters. I used to drive my 92 mustang in Vermont winters, I figured something with far less horsepower and far far less torque would have been easy to drive in the winter, not to mention I had been fed the BS about FWD being better in the snow, but this was not true.
I thought hey, maybe I'll add a turbo, a better clutch and an LSD. I looked into it, but after reading about the getrag grenading all the time, even under stock power, I just decided nah, lets not go there.
Then the MS3 came out, and I was like "yeah, thats the one, sure its still FWD but its got a massive turbo, and LSD, and similar seats!" So I went to the dealer, with an S eating grin on my face, expecting to have the test drive of my life. I was sorely mistaken. Torque steer was even more pronouced, as if the wheel was disgusted that I wanted to hold onto it. handling was worse than the SVT, because well, it weighs more. I walked away from the dealer, saddened.
Then the WRX got updated, and there was a hatchback! again I rolled off to the dealer, ready to test out what is arguably one of the best developed AWD systems (mass production anyways). I was sorely dissapointed, so much so that I cut the test drive short. Yes, it was AWD, but it handled like a front wheel drive car, and it was dog slow until you hit boost, the brakes were horrible, it didn't handle well at all, and steering input was numb, it felt like a Toyota Camry.. don't get me started on the interior or the rediculous fuel economy or the high sticker price.
Then the Fiesta came out, and I was like, come on Ford give me something here, but as far as I can tell, it's pretty much a fail. Sure it's an economy car, but it really doesnt stand out from the pack, and drives like a tin-can on wheels. At this point, I am not excited about cars, but trying to be.
The 2012 Focus comes along, and looks absolutely stunning, I repeat, it looks absolutely stunning. Is that a glimmer of excitement I see there? Well if it was it's gone now. After reading the specs, and the specs of the upcoming ST I know that I won't buy one. I'm bored of FWD, I've driven "fast" FWD and slow FWD, and both leave something to be desired.
I've looked at other cars of course, the 2011 Mustang almost got me excited, until I realized I don't need two Mustangs, my 66 pretty much keeps me happy, no, I need a year round car. I looked at the Cadillac CTS-V wagon, and almost got excited again, then I saw the sticker price, and went from midnight to six waay quick. I've looked at the STi, but I really can't merrit driving a car that gets worse gas mileage than my 4x4 SUV (and the 415hp 2011 mustang GT) and requires high test.
It's not that I'm fed up with just Ford, I just happen to gravitate to Ford, I'm fed up with all manufacturers, what I want isn't amazingly difficult to manufacture. I want something that can get out of it's own way, and be fun as a DD, I don't want it to be loaded down with what is to me, useless tech garbage. I don't want it to weigh close to or more than my SUV, it's a car for goodness sake!
I know this is a pretty doom-and-gloom post, but nobody, I repeat, nobody makes a worthy "family sedan/hatchback/wagon" that isn't super vanilla, or super expensive.
The Pontiac G8 was pretty close to footing the bill, but well, GM kinda stopped making that one, and it was a bit too big/heavy for my taste, but that's something I maybe could have put up with.
Maybe I'm the minority here, but here is my "optimal" car right now:

four door hatchback or wagon
compact or mid-size (but a small midsize if it is)
Aluminum block & head OHC V8
six-speed manual
RWD or rear biased AWD with LSD's all around
Sporty suspension, I'll take a LRA, they have proven themselves
Big brakes, obviously all wheel disc, don't care if its ABS or not
Wheels that are big enough to make it around the calipers, and no larger
Comfortable seats that hold onto me in turns, much like the Recarros in SVT's
Black leather or black cloth, but not with some crap pattern on them (think mustang cloth seats that say "mustang" in grey all aross them.)
P/L P/W P/S, I don't need traction control or a TPMS.
In dash CD/MP3 player connected to six speakers, I don't need an LCD screen, I don't need Nav, I don't need something that reads my text messages or emails for me, no SYNC, no On-star, no "instert other manufacturers version here". I don't need mood lighting in my interior, I do want real gauges, oil pressure, coolant temp, charge, not the fake ones they put in cars now that are more a yes/no indicator than an indicator of actual values.
I want a lightweight vehicle (by todays standards anyways) 3300lbs would be the absolute max curb weight I'm looking for. I want a drivers car, not something an ad department says is a drivers car (think modern BMW's).
As far as fuel economy is concerned, something that averages mid to high 20's would be great, I don't think thats much of a stretch considering my 4.6L exporer thats a decade old and just south of 100k miles can mange an average of 20mpg
Oh and a price that doesn't require me to knock over every liquor store in the tri-state area in order to afford it.
A car for me, has never been a status symbol, it's what I drive to get around in and what I drive to have fun in. It wasn't so much a problem when I was younger, and only had to consider myself, but I'm not single anymore, and I've already got a mustang and a motorcycle, I need something for the winter months and road trips.
The only option I can think of is buying an older car, dropping in a modern driveline and suspension system, and driving it, but that takes time and cash in hand, I'd really like to go to a lot, point and say "that one" sign on the dotted line and drive off.

Flame on if you feel like it, I just don't care for where the industry has gone, and where it is going. If I want power there is only uber luxury and/or utter uselessness (CTS-V, M3, corvette, Mustang etc.), if I want fuel economy I get uninspired performance, FWD, and save for body styling and badging, every manufacturer offers essentially the same thing. I'm not even going to get into modern trucks, they've all become so un-truck like that it's laughable.
If any of you agree with me, I'd like to hear your opinions, and what you're doing to make a change. If any of you don't agree with me, thats fine I want to hear your opinions too, and why you like what you have.

Happens to lots when they are well past teen years, and just "cant get into" new stuff. Cars, music, whatever. But life doesnt end at 30, try a new hobby.

I totally agree. Every new car feels kind of same and not that exciting. CTS-V id kill for....that car if i had it would keep me very happy. Im not yet sick of my SVT tho

Sorry to wake you from your reality, but reality appears to be too expensive for what your needs and desires are.

My only suggestion is test drive a BMW 1 series, it is a shame you in North America are not offered the proper BMW 1 series hatch, instead of the funny looking coupe.
Or Nissan 370Z.

Good luck getting your needs satisfied while keeping your pocket book happy.

A big part of the problem is that you don't care about the things that make different cars different. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it just means you are no longer into it. Some people feel the same way about different things, that you just stop being interested in something you used to really be interested in.

The problem starts to show up where you find you are not interested in ANYTHING. Depression or other mental issues(no insult intended) can cause this, and for those not familiar with the feeling, you may have NO idea why you just don't care about anything anymore.

On the flip side, all the new technology has me MORE interested in the 2012 Focus and Focus ST than I have been about cars in general for ten years prior to the initial news launch of the 2012 Focus back in January of 2010. Keep in mind that Ford is bringing a LOT of auto technology to this price category of cars for the first time, and that may be what has me interested. Seriously, do what you are INTERESTED in, and don't worry if your tastes change as you get older since that is normal.
