Advice needed: 2005 ZX5 with 135k and salvage title - OK for daily driver?

Hi, I am a prospective new Focus owner.

I’m considering a 2005 ZX5 with a salvage title and 135k miles, and want to know what issues I should watch for. Normally I wouldn’t consider a car with this many miles, but I only need a daily driver and it’s only $3k.

The car was used on a 80 mile round trip highway commute, and I believe it. I have just started contact with the seller and will try and post what maintenance they’ve done.

This weekend I will have the car inspected and will report back with the results.

Any initial thoughts?

Does the Duratec age poorly?

How about the auto trans – assuming fluid was never changed, how much life can I expect? How much is a replacement trans?

Would suspension need rebuild based on miles, or on age?

Thanks guys! I hope to be around here for a while.

Why does it have a salvage title?

Insuring a salvage title is next to impossible.

Edit - the commute was 180 miles round trip. So lots of miles in the last 3.5 years.

Seller says she has used synthetic oil every 6-7k miles, but doesn't remember any other fluid changes.

So it needs trans fluid, brake fluid, air filter, accessory belt, spark plugs... the whole shebang.

Is it too much hassle?

It's also one hour away, and there's so much action on it that I can't get it to a mechanic.

I've owned a few salvage title cars and have never had a problem with insurance. If you wreck it, the insurance companies will offer you less of a payout on a total loss, but it's all relative as you bought it cheap to begin with.

I'd find out information on why it's a salvage, and what sort of repair has been done. There are some hack jobs out there I wouldn't touch. There are also some really decent ones that will never give you a problem.

$3k on an '05 ZX5 is a great deal. Look into it a bit more though first.

Thanks for the advice, everyone!

The car sold to the first guy to see it. I was shut out. There were about eight people interested within 24 hours.

Turns out the salvage titles was from a crash in 2007, but it's been driven 90k miles since then.

it was a screaming deal, every single option... dang.

See you guys for the next one.
