What's up with mileage numbers on '12s?

I just looked at my dealer inventory and they have 3 listed, two of them SE hatches w/ auto transmissions. Looking at the stickers of both, one has 37mpg highway listed and they other has 38mpg highway.

Anyone know what might be the difference?

Not sure why those would differ by 1 mpg, has to be something with the options?

I know some of them will have the SFE package are supposed to get 40mpg

The difference is selectshift (manual shifting) and no selectshift. It requires a different EPA testing cycle if it has manual shifting capability. Here is the breakdown:

Fuel Mileage City/Highway/Combined

Ford Focus manual 5 speed S, SE 26/36/30
Ford Focus S, SE without SelectShift Automatic 28/38/31 (Sedan, Hatchback)
Ford Focus SE, SEL and Titanium with SelectShift Automatic 27/37/31 (Sedan, Hatchback)
Ford Focus SFE Automatic 28/40 (Sedan)

What if I had an SEL and just didn't bother using the manual shifting button?

Thanks for that. So far I'd only seen the mileage info for the manual, regular auto, and SFE. I hadn't seen the SelectShift numbers published yet, but had seen those in a review.

They probably have the same gear ratios and same software, so it should be the same. Notice that they have the same combined numbers, which likely means the difference is small and it was a matter of rounding. 1mpg is really inconsequential, especially when you consider how everyone's real-world driving is unique.

LostContrails I think the transmission is the same 6 speed auto just without a selectshift option. I doubt many will use this option regularly anyway. I have used it once since I got my Elantra last month just to test it out. My 6 speed auto shifts nicely and from what I read the Focus seems tuned a little more towards performance. It Will be interesting to see what Tom and other tuners can do with it.
