Automatic helps boost MPGs

Nothing too exciting about this, but I thought it was a nice read with a really cool CG graphic of the automatic transmission.

It's technically related more to a manual than an automatic. But in layman's terms I guess that's what they had to call it to avoid public confusion. I think places like might have to start making subcategories for automatic transmissions. CVT is another unique form of an automatic that follows unconventional shifting methods.

I for one can't wait until traditional torque converter automatics are finally phased out for good. Hopefully Ford's efforts will inspire other manufacturers to do the same. Hyundai is already following closely behind. I hope VW and other manufacturers are kicking themselves for not making these available on base models sooner—their loss!

I find it pretty amazing that they dropped 30lbs from the weight of the transmission while adding two more gears and making it better overall. That's a solid achievement.

Still, it's an automatic, not a manual. It manages the clutch for you, and will shift for you also, after all, that's what makes a transmission "automatic" vs. "manual". It's just a better automatic than most. What needs to be made apparent to the general car-buying public is that transmissions such as the PowerShift, Tiptronic, DSG, SMG, etc., offer advantages over older style automatics that use a torque converter.

My BMW has a traditional automatic, and it gets better mileage and acceleration than the manual. So it doesn't always require a special transmission to outperform a manual. Clearly advances are being made with all automatic transmissions these days.
