commuter car

Alright looking for some opions... I got promoted 2 months ago for work, which is great but it also entailed me having a 40 minute commute to work one way. Currently my only ride is my 09 f-150 with the 5.4, which for a truck does great on gas I've been averaging 20.2 mpg since it's basically all highway. Problem is I'm racking up miles on it pretty quick and burning about $100/week to travel to work and back. I've been looking for a cheap commuter car, I want something that's going to get me 40+ mpg for no more than 2500$ as I'll probably only be doing this drive for 6 months until I get promoted again to a position I'll likely hold a year so I can move and sign a year long lease. I've come across two vehicles that peeked my interest. First is an 01 Jetta TDI with about 200k (yes a ton but it seems like it's in great shape and with a diesel I'm not too worried about the mileage) for $2800. The second is a TDI wagon with 180K for $3300 and it's an 02... also seems to be in good shape. Any of you guys ever own one of these? I just want something I can just insure for liability to keep costs down and run it until I get the next promotion with a company car... also may just bite the bullet and keep driving the truck to avoid the hassles of another car and double maintainence. I've thought of another focus as well, but I'd probably see at least 10 mpg less and if I do get one I know I'll be picky and it wont stack up to my previous SVT.

Idk a focus wouldn't be a bad choice...I hate to say it but you may also be able to find a Honda, and as we all know they run like champs for quite a while

As for the vw's I'm not a big fan, never have been

Any Contour SVT's nearby? That'll keep your SVT bug entertained (it is a SVT afterall), I'm seeing them under $3000 with under 180k miles and I was getting about 32mpg highway with mine. Only thing that worries me as I've seen a couple that say new engine installed. So not sure how the longevity the 2.5l is? Then again probably kids beating the hell out of them.

Should have never sold mine >:( Had only 74k on it. 2 years ago now i sold it.

Either one of those Jetta's would probably be a good deal, but I'd invest in a full vehicle inspection before pulling the handle........

Yea.. I checked insurance quotes today.. roughly $60/month to add one on with no collision or anything. So I figure if I spend $50/week on fuel for it + insurance and maintainence items I'm looking at roughly $300/month for one plus the initial investment (~$3k over ~ 6 months = $500/month - sale price of car afterwards) . I don't think the benefit outgains the costs. Looks like I'm driving the Ferd F-teen thousand. Makes more financial sense to me at this point since fuel for the truck costs me ~$400/month at currrent prices.

During the last fuel spike a few friends bought bikes. For some a $200 a month bike payment, insurance, and gas was cheaper than commuting in their truck or suv. Others simply convinced their wives it was.

At least you're smart enough to weigh the differences.

That's the reason we now have a focus. I have a 30 mile each way commute to work, bronco got 9 mpg and the other cars are simply not going to rack up mileage. Even with full coverage on the focus it's saving money as I'm averaging 32-33 mpg on a weekly basis in the focus and more on random road trips.

Yeah... considered that route too... but I have a shirt and tie kinda job.. and I do stupid enough things on my ATV as it is. I don't think a bike is a great choice for me.
