The Reason for Traffic....

Or so these guys say...

http://www.autoblog.com/2011/03/05/the-science-behind-traffic-jams-infographic/

Not sure how LA was not on the list. And for anyone who lives on long island knows about the horror that is the southern state. Tons of hills and blind curves, lanes ending here and there, exit ramps and on ramps that are abrut and combined into one. Yes I think that is the most retarded thing ever, there are exits that are both entrances, so you can imagine the choas that insues with people tryig to get on and off the parkway atthe same time. And they not long either, you got about three seconds to get out of the right lane onto the exit before you miss it entirely. The roads were not meant for so many cars and wasnt meant for vehicles going 55-70 miles per hour. Was built as a sunday drive parkway with speeds up to 45. Most of the parkways are similar to this, but the southern state parkway is the worst. Road is needed often on these roads also. And the usual culprit for traffic is rubber necking people pulled over or the Sun, yes the sun, because people havent heard of these things called sunglasses. Theres only one real highway dedicated to heavy traffic and thats the Long Island Expressway.

most traffic issues around where i live are,
1.) transport trucks passing each other (both governed to 105km/h)
2.) car crashes (since moving to windsor i have seen 3 all caused by asians for some reason and i have been here 6 months)
3.) road work/hydro lines

In the Twins Cities metro, it's primarily due to aging infrastructure that hasn't kept up with growth.

I remember when there was such a thing called "rush hour"... and that's about what it was. Man, the good ol' days... now it's rush 4 hours... and that's if there's no inclement weather.

Personally, I hardly care since I live very close to where I work... but every once in a while I get stuck in a jam..

I'm a truck driver, and You hit the nail on the head with that one. This unfortunately is the problem EVERYWHERE. Our infrastructure is falling apart horribly. On I-95 in Pawtucket Rhode Island, The river bridge has been deemed structurally unsafe for over two years. Granted the state is banking money on trucks who cross it at 3 grand a pop. you are more than 100% correct man. plus people being stupid anyway. in rush hour traffic, you should not be being passed uphill by a loaded tractor trailer in the right lane! PERIOD!

Following distance, following distance, following distance!!! Here in socal it's all about following distance. Everyone is 2 car lengths apart at 70mph. Even with very long exit lanes , someone will wait till the last moment and then, BAM! cascade braking, all the way back. If you keep a good 10 car lengths and more in a traffic jam, then you don't have to hit your brakes when the guy in front of you slows down. No brake lights for you can sometimes mean no brake lights behind you. Every time there's a jam, I let a large space build up in front of me so I can coast and avoid braking. And every time I do that, people use it to try and cut ahead >=(
But sometimes the guy behind me catches on, and leaves following distance, too. But that's rare!
The other big issue is people not letting merging traffic in, as well as merging traffic not getting up to speed in time.

I think the highway system in CT are the most confusing and dangerous. Especially going into Hartford, there are just to many people on the highway in or around Hartford, especially around those special times of the day. I have lived in CT for all of my life, and even I am still confused sometimes by the way the highways merge and everything its asking for a problem, and often does have semi truck problems.

Agreed. Atleast they ARE working on Hartford. slowly but surely. The worst is I-95 merging with 91 and anything south of New Haven..... God I hate traffic
