Is this normal?

my fuel economy mpg thing this morning said i was getting 28.8 mpg. during lunch today i decided to drive out to taco bell and when i looked down at my mpg it said about 26.6 mpg. at this point the had been sitting outside for about 3 hours in the parking lot. anyways while i was driving back from taco bell i looked again and it jumped from about 30+ mpg all the way up to 50 mpg. this is all street driving by the way. no WOT blasts just normal commuting. while driving on the highway the mpg constantly changed alot more frequently than usual. it went up by .1 mpg about every 5 or so seconds. im stumped on this. i'd like to go back to my 28.8 mpg. the only thing i can think of is when i attempted to turn off the traction control i may have pressed the reset button by mistake but at that time my screen was showing the mpg screen with the 6 bars and up/down arrows, not the mpg screen with the average. does anyone have any clue?

Maybe it said 50mpg while u were cruising around 30mph on the street thinking you were going to continue @ that constant speed? Idk.

it should move, its an AVERAGE. when you hit the gas it goes down, and when you coast/decel it rockets up.

and that measurement of fuel economy is crap. it is just a rough estimate not a accurate one. the only correct way to measure fuel economy is to manually do the math.

ok, mileage calculation is pretty simple. First fill the tank and reset the trip meter, or record the mileage. Then drive like you would normally. The next time you get fuel divide the miles you went by the fuel you put in. so...

Say I went 250 miles and put in 10 gallons. Thats 25mpg average for that tank of fuel.

It's just an instantaneous average 'at that moment'.
BTW, when you're just sitting, with the motor idling, you're getting ZERO miles per gallon......

Did you reset it recently? It's a total average of the computer determined number since the last time you reset it.
Not a current mpg. Our Focus doesn't have that.
It jumps around more when it's newly reset but lets say you drove for 1000mi with it since last reset it'll take ALOT to move it at all.

I've noticed in the cold weather my MPG has went down the crapper with 22mpgs-25mpg. I average 30+ all the time before this cold weather

the only time i can think i've reset it is today when i accidently pressed that button instead of the traction control button which was the intended button i was looking for. that was on the screen with the arrows though. before today i have never set it at all.
