2004 or 2005?

So I'm new to the forum; actually I don't even own a focus...but I've been looking for a car to commute in that has a decent amount of cargo space and is fun to drive, which has lead me to check out ZX3's & ZX5's. I've been watching the classified postings for a model with low mileage and a 5-spd since I always prefer to shift for myself, and I came across two options recently:

2004 ZX3 2.3L, 5spd, 62k miles for $3000
2005 ZX3 2.0L, 5-spd, 66k miles for $4600

My question is, is there much of a reliability/performance difference between the 2.0 zetec and the 2.0 duratec engines? Is the 2005 worth the extra $1600? Are there other benefits beside the different engine in going from a 2004 to a 2005?

Thanks

For some reason, my original post doesn't seem to be showing up. Basically, I have 2 options for potential cars:

2004 ZX3 2.3 5-spd, 62k, $3100
2005 ZX3 2.0, 5-spd, 66k, $4600

Is the 2005 that much more reliable or were there many improvements over the 2004 that would warrant spending an extra $1500? How about the 2005 2.0 duratec vs. the 2004 2.3? Both cars have clean titles.

Thanks

The car would be used for commuting, so based on msn autos' specs, I'd be giving up 2 mpg hwy with the 2.3? I guess that's not significant, but are those figures accurate? 33mpg for the 2.3 and 35mpg for the 2.0?

If you value performance, the 2.3 will be better. If you value mileage, the 2.0 will be better. I think you'll likely give up even more than a mere 2 mpg with the 2.3 but I could be wrong. I drive the 2.3 and that's fine for me because my commutes are so short that I don't care about mileage much.

In your situation, I guess I also really have to wonder about other factors as well (overall condition, features, purchase cost, etc), but since you didn't mention them, I won't comment on them.

The "better" looking frt end is subjective, but you have to admit, the interior got much, much better in 05. They lost all those crazy angles and odd shapes.

The 2005 is in better shape, and has a new clutch. My commute is about 20 miles each way on 90% highways. I guess my other question was, were there any significant changes (apart from engines) from 2004 to 2005 that might influence my decision?

2005 has bigger brake rotors, because 00-04 had an occasional problem with rotors overheating and warping. As said before, the interior layout in the 05 is a bit cleaner. If you're looking for a car to keep factory stock and use as a commuter, go with the 05.

Also, just to fill you in as to why so many people are telling you to get the 2.3. 00-02 came with a 2.0L Zetec (ehh), 2.0L SPI (slow), or 2.0L SVT (only in an SVT Focus). Some 03 and 04 models, though, started coming with the 2.3L Duratec engine, which has the potential to be quite a beast. Then for 05-07, the 2.0 Duratec became the base engine, and only the performance ST trim package (only available as a sedan) got the 2.3. In short, 03 and 04 are the only years where you get the 2.3L Duratec in a hatchback, the preferred body style of many for the Focus.

honestly if ur just gonna be commuting around in the car, get the 05. but if u plan on modding at all, get the 2.3. the 2.3 is a better motor well...cause its got .3 liters more of displacement. and my .02, the 05's interior is more bland than the 00-04. it got boring and dull. i <3 my interior a shit ton more than my fiancee's 07.
