Further proof...

... of just how far the Mustang has come in recent years. Not too long ago, Motor Trend showed how the current Mustang GT was, pound-for-pound, just as capable as the current BMW M3 around the track, numbers wise. Today we can add a few other high-tech cars the Mustang soundly trounces around a racetrack: the STi and EVO X. Just got my new issue of Car & Driver in the mail, doing their annual "Lightning Lap" around Virginia International Raceway. See results below.

STi: Lap time 3:13.8
EVO X: Lap time 3:10.6
Mustang GT: Lap time 3.08.6
Lexus IS-F: Lap time 3:05.4
Shelby GT500: Lap time 3:04.0

For those who may not know, the Mustang GT beating the STi by 5 seconds is astronomically huge. And the Shelby GT500 smoking the STi by 9 seconds is something that will forever dent STi enthuisiasts pride. 9 seconds?!?!

Congrats Ford! You have taken down a ricer's Holy Grail car without the aid of AWD and electronic wizardry. Funnier still is the fact that the butt-kickin was done with a live axle, too.

I knew the STi guys would try and make excuses...

Here they come!

Who cares? You dont buy a Mustang for the snow. Period. And I dont care that that STi does semi-ok in the snow, either. Both are SPORTS CARS, no? Well, I was just proving that the low-tech Mustang, which is soooo hated by import drivers, not only beats their high-tech STi and EVO around a track, but it does so by a HUGE margin. Ouch.

Ya i just got mine too and was seriously surprised at how good the mustang did. Even the V6 version did really really well! The GT500 was also better then:

Mustang GT 3:04
Cadillac CTS-V Coupe 3:04.2
Mercedes Benz E63 AMG 306.9
Lotus Evora 3:08.3

These are Cars that cost thousands of dollars more then the mustang GT500. It did better hands down then these cars. Ford is really doing well.

Yeah, I remember last year when the Corvette Grand Sport whomped on cars that cost 2-3 times more than it. Now if only Ford would fix the rear of the new Mustang so it didn't look like it was trying to be a Supra...

I love Mustangs. And I love STI's.

Hopefully I will be able to own both in my life.

Don't get me wrong, I think the STI is played out and the evo is okay, but really? Come on it beat those two cars around a track on turning and stuff?

Fire the drivers of the STI and evo, and give the car's to the mustang driver, and lets see what goes down.

The same professional drivers test each car, DJ. It's not a head to head race with different drivers. It's pretty safe to trust the results.
