Why are cars so expensive?

Imo too many safety regulations and greed. A sub compact should not cost > 15k.

Development ,saftey regulations and materials do drive the price up, but mostly it's greed.

Actually, they're pretty cheap in the grand scheme of things once you adjust for inflation. A $15k subcompact car you buy today can be expected to hit 150,000 miles without much trouble along the way. It will also have an extremely small effect on air quality, and will protect you in all but the most extreme crash scenarios. All while returning >30mpg combined fuel economy with sub 10-second 00-60 times (most are ~9seconds).

Honestly, that's a bargain to me. Compare it to the crap-buckets our parents drove for similar amounts of money (in real dollars, not nominal).

Well, the Focus could actually cost a lot more. In 2007 or 08, Ford was losing $4-$5000 PER CAR sold. I also remember ready several years ago that they were losing a couple thousand per Focus sold...

Well, those were always a really fuzzy calculation based on the assumption that the fixed costs of the business (most notably the pension obligations) were uniformly applied to each car sold. Now that they've shed a lot of their pension obligations and future wage promises, they're back to making a profit on each vehicle sold, including small cars. Best estimates I've seen are something like $1-2k for a small car (more like $5k + for a truck or SUV).

It's not like they stripped 4k of content out of the Focus in the last few years, they just got rid of a lot of the fixed cost of running the company.

This is the answer, IMO. Businesses are only going to continue to produce and sell at a certain price as long as there are buyers willing to pay. If I try to sell my $236k house for $500k, no one will buy it. I will need to lower my asking price to around $236k, and lower if I'm looking to sell quickly. It's all in the demand and what we're willing to pay.

At the same time, businesses can only lower the price so much before it's not worth it for them to continue to produce that car.

Do you have a report or something to link that shows Ford is now making money on each Focus sold? I know Ford has been profitable for the last year but that doesn't mean they're making money on every vehicle they sell, namely the Focus.
