Ford Bringing "Start-Stop" to all models in 2012

http://news.cnet.com/8301-11128_3-20026624-54.html

Ford's considering bringing the start stop technology used in hybrids to all their vehicles. This would stop the engine when the vehicle is stopped.

I can see this saving a very small amount of fuel, but wouldn't this hurt performance? And having your engine start and stop so often can't be great for it, can it?

Your posted a good question out there.

Let me add:

What happens if the technology malfunctions?

Dear GOD!!! I hope it's optional. I'd rather opt out of this for several reasons. I don't care how advanced or reliable this technology becomes... I simply don't want it, period.

^^^Not according to the article:
Quote:
Starting in 2012 in the U.S., it will be built into conventional diesel and gasoline cars, crossovers, and SUVs, Ford said.
And, what is it?
Something like 80% of an engine's wear occurs during start up?
I sure hope you can turn this POS feature off...permanently.

Here's some more info

If this happens, I will have to find a new car brand to buy from. Period. FoMoCo may not care, but I will be one less future customer if They force this BS feel-good tech on the brand.

^^^I gotta agree with ya there.
I've been seriously thinking of a new vehicle in 2012 from Ford (either trading in my SVTF for a new car, or trade in my F-150 for a new truck).
But, I'll be going elsewhere if the start-stop can't be turned off.

Frankly, I've already resigned myself to the fact that I may be stuck with what I already have for years to come now anyway.
The TPMS has already got me turned away from new cars, and don't get me started on blind spot warning and other "mindless driver" features like that.
