I don't know what full time and part time 4WD is. I know high range and low range, but that's gearing- self explanatory. AWD systems are different, but nearly all 4WD systems on the planet- including AWD- only drive 2 wheels at at time. Which wheel is determined by the differential.

Now if you want real 4WD you'll have to look for older vehicles with locked differentials. Even those are rare because most people will change out these drives for locking drives where the other axle can be unlocked. It causes less strain on the components, makes driving it easier, and increases fuel economy. When real 4WD is needed- the axle can be locked in. Some big time 4 wheelin' guys will install locking rears in their vehicles making it a 3WD when locked. LOL.

Why did you want to know?

I went wheeling a couple weeks ago with someone that did a V-8 swap in his Ranger, but had to use the AWD drivetrain. Needless to say, he ended up leaving his truck at the gate. Whenever he tried to use the V-8 power to get out of something, it would overpower the transfer case kicking it back into 2WD. Its completely useless off road.

Good AWD systems are great in the snow though.

and your buddy shouldve stuck to the smaller motor and went with low gearing. Off roading is not a game of raw power... it's all about gearing, traction, useable power, and ground clearance. Generally a 4 cyl is more than enough for off roading with the right set of gears.

Oh I understand. He is very knowledgeable, but an idiot at the same time. He can do all kinds of work that I wouldn't touch, but he thinks he has to have the biggest motor, biggest tires, ect. All he does is break stuff, then fix it again.
