What model year are you looking to buy? If it is 2000-2004 I would say get the Zetec. All of 2005-2010's are Duratec's. Both are good motors, the Duratec has 6 more hp over the older Zetec. Both motors have double over head cams and run pretty good. I would stay away from an older SPI motor. They only have like 105 hp and would be a real dog in an auto.

1995-97? The focus didn't get made until 1999. Before that is was the escort that was out.

If it is the 2005-2007 then all of them have the same motor for the automatics. It is the 2.0 Duratec rated at 136 hp. The 2.3 liter is in the ST and it is a stick shift only.

As has been said before, the only engine you don't want is the Split Port Injection motor- or SPI. If you pop the hood and the engine doesn't have spark plugs that go in the center of the valve cover or says "Split Port Injection" on the valve cover- you don't want it.

The Zetec has a timing belt, so you should look for maintenance records that the timing belt has been replaced if the mileage is over 100k. Be wary of 150k + mileage with no record of timing belt replacement unless you're comfortable with doing that job yourself. Zetecs also had some issues with the thermostat housing cracking- so look for dried coolant residue around the thermostat housing which is located at the back of the cylinder head. Another minor problem is damage to the fan wiring harness from exhaust heat- if you see an exhaust heat shield removed- you should make sure that the engine cooling fans work. I'd turn on the AC first to see if a fan comes on, but the best test is to drive the vehicle around until it warms up, and then make sure the fans are on.

There are rare examples of PZEV Duratec Foci in the 03-04 year model bodies. These would be either special order, or moved from "green" states. Look for coil on plug ignition, and a plastic intake manifold just behind the radiator. The Duratec engine doesn't have any thing written on it's valve cover, so COP ignition is the easiest way to identify it.
