2010/11 Focus SES or...?

We are looking to get a new car for my fiance at tax time, we were almost set on a new or very very lightly used focus which are running in the 14,500-16,500 range for the model and options SHE wants.... mind you she is a female so she gets what SHE wants haha...

but while looking at a used car mag the other day there are many more 'nice' options in a specific price range... if we were to buy a used non-focus we would spend 9000-12000

while the focus we would get would be less than 15000 miles the other choices will have 55000-75000 miles. Also keep in mind i am a certified auto tech so expenxe german labor rates do not need to be figured into your choices....

i was kind of hesitant of asking this on FF but its worth a shot

so here are the options
2010 Focus SES (loaded, leather, sunroof, etc)

2003-05 BMW 325xi(AWD, Obviously Loaded)

2003-2005 Volvo S60 (not the S60R :(, but again AWD loaded)

last but definately not least...

2003-04 Mercedes Benz C240(awd, again loaded!)

I understand you are a mechanic and all but isnt the piece of mind of getting a new car worth it? I say go with the ses although I also like the mercedes....remember even though you will do all the work yourself dont forget that the prices of parts will def. offset that on the imports. Good Luck w/ your decision.

I think he meant new to him.

I'm a goofball when it comes to buying cars for loved ones. I look at IIHS safety ratings. I'm not sure if the BMW or Mercedes would come out ahead, but my pick would be between one of those 2. Yes Volvo is the safety company, but the 2 German cars are known to be tanks. Ask anyone who works for emergency services. All my experiences with those are with the older body styles though. I've heard some not so good things about later model BMW and Mercedes that I can't verify for truth. I'd check out the IIHS ratings. I think everything has a 5 star government crash test rating, so I'd ignore those. The real teller would be if you know someone who works for the fire dept or is an paramedic/EMT. All the paramedics I know drive BMWs or Fords. There's my 2 cents.

I checked, and I was right, the BMW scored higher than the Mercedes and the Volvo with the real difference being in side impact. The other 2 had average side impact ratings, and BMW had good. Side impact is the one that I worry about most.

I had an old girlfriend who wasn't paying attention one day and decided to run a red light instead of locking up the brakes. Well the old lady in her 83 Delta 88 who was turning in front of her didn't slow down and plowed right into the side of the 91 325 right on the driver's door in front of the C pillar- about the worst side impact you could have. The 88 looked like it had hit a brick wall, the steering was pushed back, nose all crumpled up, and only 3 wheels on the ground. The BMW's driver's window didn't even break. It was outside the window channel- you'd think it would've broken- and from the outside it looked horrible- on the inside you couldn't even tell she'd been in an accident. The interior panel wasn't even bulging from what I can remember. She drove it home, but the repair cost was too high since the A and C pillar were damaged.

If I could afford it, my wife would be sporting a BMW for that reason alone.

BMW. Fine driver's car... With a great safety rating (as evidenced by a prev. post)... very good resale value... and AWD besides. Comfort, performance, safety. Good blend.

+ the '10 and '11 Foci are slightly stale in light of the advancements made for 2012. Still good cars, but just overmatched here, IMO.

the focus would be new new the otehrs would be used and new to me....

the only advantage for the focus is gas mileage and warranty...

the bmw is my favorite. we are test driving a 330XI tomorrow... maybe we will go try the s60 too...

payments on the bmw will alsoo be about $50 a month cheaper, i guess we could use that money for the premium fuel lol
