1991 Volvo 240 wagon

I have been looking for a good deal on a winer car for a while now. My work just took a 1991 Volvo 240 wagon w/ 170k on trade in and they want $800 for it. The only bad I found so far is it might need a clutch. But, it has not been up on my lift yet. I also found a 1985 Saab 900s non turbo for sale. Needs front brakes and a rear strut mount. They are asking 300 for the SAAB and all the parts would end up around 200. So, my question is should i get the SAAB for $500 or the Volvo for 800 + clutch? Any insight would be helpful, i need to decide by the end of the day.

Get the Volvo! I have a special place in my heart for Volvo's. Plus they are made in Sweden, perfect for winter.

Volvo 240: you must familiarize yourself with the ignition switch replacement, and keep one in the glove along with a screwdriver. It's a common problem for that Volvo. There's a lot of good to those Volvos though.

The Saab is cheaper. Buy them both, fix them both, sell the one that you like least. You should be able to keep parts cost down to where you can make money selling either for $1500. That's a good price range to be in around tax return time. I personally don't see how either of them will be excellent winter cars because both are RWD. Now if you're just wanting something to collect salt instead of your Focus- I can understand that.

The SAAB is FWD and comes with snow tires. Volvo is RWD and i can get snows for free. buying them both is a good idea. But, i still want a turbo SAAB.

you are correct, i just really don't want salt on my focus, and i don't want to be plowing my driveway with it again.

Get the Saab and throw a turbo on it. I had the 1987 9000 turbo and it was so fun. And I know you will love it, just make sure the reverse gear is still good.

Is it the executive sports car edition? The suspension on them is awesome, I could take a hair pin turn doing 80 in that sucker on a privately owned road in Maine.
