Car passed inspection, butů

They told me I need a new oil pan (rusted), new valve cover gasket, battery is at 69%, and the power steering fluid needs replaced. Plus I'll need some summer tires come spring. It's going to be an expensive year. Any tips or suggestions on the upcoming fixes?

Well first off good job on not falling into their trap and getting all these things done after the inspection. How old is the battery? Is the oil pan really rusted, and how bad is it, like is it going to hit something and create a hole? Whats wrong with the valve gasket, is their oil leaking from the sides? Btw how many miles are on the car?

If the oil pan is in danger of getting a hole in it replace it immediatly. Valve cover gasket you can do yourself, itll cost you 40 bucks or so for the part and then some time. Itll cost over 100 at a shop, not worth it. The fluid idk, why did they say it needs to be replaced?

Yeah, no way would I let the dealership work on it. My brother should be able to help with all the repairs. Car has 75k miles and is 7 yrs old. So still original battery. They told me if something were to hit the oil pan, it could put a hole in it. It's more rusted on the one side, the bottom still looks good. The valve gasket is leaking a little from the sides. They said the fluid is brown and should be red, so they suggested their flush and have new fluid put in.

I agree^^^. But I find it hard to believe the oil pan is so far gone on this 7yr car that you can't take it off, sand it, prime it , and paint it.

My wagon is 10 yr's old with 160k on it, and it had a little rust that I just sanded and painted.

I have never heard of an oil pan rusting so much it needs to be replaced. Seems like that would take way more than 7 years or 75,000 miles.

I've seen pictures of vdubbers who are dropped that busted oil pans, it ain't pretty. Are you dropped? I can't see hitting anything in the road big enough to put a hole in the pan on stock ride height.

I looked at some other posts and it seems some have problems with rust and others don't. Guess I'm one of the unfortunate.

The car is stock height.

I looked at Rock Auto and the price is only $50+ for the lower pan. So it's not too bad, but sucks that it has to be done at all.

Yea Id replace the battery asap lol. 7 years is a really long time. 5 years with the same one and your lucky. That be one of the first things on my list and Id do it soon before it gets even colder. Where is it leaking from the valve cover? The thing with that is usually you can leave it alone for a while, but the thing that happens alot its the leaking oil drips onto the thermostate housing and it causes it to fail, so you dont want to wait too long.

DrkKnight614:

I don't think the gasket is really leaking, I think it's more just seeping out some. But the oil around the gasket is mostly around the side facing the front.
