95 Daewoo hooptie best car for $500

About 6 months ago I bought a 95 Daewoo Prince "ace" with 100k miles on it.

It was dirty, and ugly, the outside looks pretty bad too. I had to replace the radiator (with towing, and labor $90) and that's about it. So it's basically a $600 car.

It doesn't queak, crack, handles just fine, and always cranks over. I took it to a repair shop a week ago just to have it looked over because it was free. The guy told me he couldn't find any problems with it. (this is coming from a garage that would make money if there was a problem)

I'm actually quite pleased with my purchase I've put 5,000 miles on it (I know not alot for the states, but quite a bit for Korea) and it's never failed me. Everything works...

Anyone of you guys ever bought a old car that just gave you great value?

O yea, I'll prob end up selling it for more then what I bought it for. Simply because I know a mechanic who did a bit of polishing up on it. Nothing major spent like $100 improving odds and ends here and there

Around 1997 I bought a used 1986 Ford Tempo GL 2 door coupe for around $1100 bucks. This car was loaded(possibly a special order based on the equipment it had).
Power locks
Power steering
Power mirrors
AM/FM/Cassette
A/C
Cruise control
Trunklid luggage rack
Two tone red/gray paint
But the best part was the powertrain combo:2.3 liter HSO(High Specific Output)version of the HSC(High Swirl Combustion) engine, hooked up to a 5-spd manual transmission.
(Anyone who has driven one will tell you,Tempo/Topaz was RARE with a manual, but more reliable than the 3-spd auto versions). The car was a "Q-ship"in its own right. I used to lay the smackdown on certain imports, all the while getting 26-27 m.p.g. back then(which was pretty good for a compact car back then. The only problems it gave me weas the ignition coil and had to replace the modulator when I first got it. I miss that car,but my Focus coupe is a "spiritual successor" to make up for it.

My friend had a Lanos hatchback that was...well I don't know what to say about it. I do know she needed back brakes for it once and couldn't find them anywhere. I think she ordered them from the internet but I can't remember cause it was so long ago.

Cars like these fall into the beater category. You drive them till they die all while putting the least amount of money possible.

and holy cow a Tempo w/ the 2.3 HSO and 5 speed!! Now that's a rare beater car find IMO.

had a 88 4 runner that I was given for a $140 debt. It ran I drove it like a maniac, blew the headgaskets(so i filled it with warm water every morning) and traded it in for the Mazdaspeed miata, got a $1000 trade in on it.
Oh yeah I jumped it over a stream

Some cars just refuse to die

Friend has a farm back in the states, and his beat around farm car is a regular cab 2WD Ford Ranger with 260k miles, maybe 500 of those miles were on pavement. All the major bits and pieces are the same. There are dents, starches, rust, and the passenger side mirror if hanging over (he hit a patch of ice and hit a tree, he then drove home...)

This truck carries firewood, hauls trailers with horses and cows, takes him out hunting, runs through ice and snow and mud...The thing just won't die.

O yea they bought it brand new in 1987. Asked his dad once why he hasn't upgraded to something nicer and he goes "cause this thing has yet to fail me once, and I've punished the living crap out of it"

It's also been in a series of farm accidents, one time during a hunting trip the truck flipped over. The guy was driving it hit something it threw the truck off the road and down a ditch and it rolled over on it's wheels and he drove it back up the hill. Granted it did need some repairs that time.
