Really GM...new PR campaign

I just saw this commercial during the Macy's Parade. It took me awhile to figure out what it was for...then GM said thanks. It just pissed me off and I wanted to know how yall felt about.

Discuss: Your reaction to the commercial

Uh, so you'd have preferred them not to get a loan (because it was a loan with interest) and not to pay us back ahead of schedule then say thank you?

You do realize GM paid back the government months ago, and recently was put back on the trading block?

Also, I know this has been a real strange thing for some people, but it's not like automaker bail-outs by governments are a new thing. The US govt bailed out Chrysler in 1980, and made $350M in interest by the time the loan was paid off in 1983. I'm not sure how much we've profited from this big screw up, but I don't remember Chrysler thanking the public for loan guarantees in the 80s.

Maybe the waste of advertising money upset you? Ok, well it wasn't nearly as upsetting as BP's "feel good" commercials in the states while their former CEO was on BBC complaining that he'd rather be yachting than cleaning up the Gulf of Mexico. That's all forgotten now- when are they going to pay us back? Will we get interest on that deal?

History of Government Bailouts Prior to 2008

What's annoying to me is that the Savings and Loan scandal of the early 90's is not included. I'm fairly certain that got millions in taxpayer money, but I guess if you just give it away then it's not considered a bailout.

I think if you read that, you'll realize that some of the prior bailouts were even more worthless than this recent one. Lockheed's bailout in 71 for example- big freaking deal! It's not like Lockheed didn't bankrupt (through underhanded backroom deals) other military aviation companies after WW2.

I saw the commercial and also found it strange. We still own about 30%. We owned about 60% before GM started selling stock again.

just do a google on gm bailout payback. but don't bother to look at national media, their getting paid to run gm's payback commercials, so why would they make them out in another light...

Thank you whynotthinkwhynot.

Id like to ask all the complainers what they think should of been done.

People are mad because "their" money was used to pay gm, but please...your money is used for much worse things then keeping gm, a giant company with millions of people working for them, with millions of other people making money from them as suppliers.

So yea, let them go under, let all those people lose their jobs, and let not only gm go down, but more then likely many other companies as well thay depend on a huge company like gm to keep in buisness. Oh and after that all crumbles, watch what kind of tsunami hits the other automakers. And the other thing...how do you even know a cent of your earnings went to gm...did you look at your paycheck and see, 50.95 to medicare, 140.60 to social security, and 20.30 to GM? I didnt think so.

Guys this is simple economics... GM failed because of company greed and bad descision making.

If GM was to shut down on a Friday evening by Monday Morning there would be investors standing in line to buy everything they left behind and start the factories right back up.

OK....I didnt mean to start a fire storm or an argument. I just said how much the commercial pissed me off...it was just the message of "we all fall" and that we are glad that the Gov't was there to bail us out

so according to you, them letting go of olds, hummer, pontiac, etc (yes there are other things, saturn and a couple of foreign interests) is ok to do? no one lost jobs? sure didn't put suppliers, or anything else out of business doing it and it didn't cause a tsunami... not even a ripple.
Funny how ford and other companies had no problem...and didn't need a bailout. They seem to actually be able to manage their money.
