Buying a used Focus, what to look for?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking into buying a used focus. It is a 2003 model estate with 1.6 liter petrol engine (Zetec-SE) and manual gearbox (IB5). The car has 117.000 km (73.000 m) on the odometer.

Can you please give me some hints as what to look for when inspecting the condition of the car. I mean specific tips for a Focus, like where to look for rust, which parts should have been replaced already, etc.

Are there any special failures that are more common in these cars (Focus mk 1, or the 2003 model) than other cars.

Which parts (or fluids) are essential to use the dealer's choice (and not an aftermarket) and how can I tell the difference?

What is the recommended interval for time-belt renewal?

How are the electrics in these cars? Multiplexed? How many computers? Can the fault log be read with a standard OBD2 or does it require some specific (licensed) unit?

And last but not least, should I go for it? Will this car do another 100.000 km (62.000 m) with some TLC?

I drive a Peugeot 206, 1.4 liter petrol model 2004 at the moment, just had the second child so I need a litle more space. I'm not planning any modifications for more power or better handling. If I buy this car I will try to do most of the maintenance myself. I'm a complete novice, but internet forums, Hayne's manuals and lots of patience have served me very well till this date (with a VW Polo and the Peugeot).

Thank you for reading,
jens

Moved to General Car Chat, you'll get a better answer in here than in Technical chat. Best of luck, and welcome to FF!!

Posted via FF MobileAt that mileage it shouldn` need any particular maint. issues addressed other than fresh tires & a COMPLETE brake job (new rotors & drums, not just some new pads up front). There should be no visible rust, no cheapo modifications, and no evidence of major repair. Any exceptions to this would warrant a fuller explanation of what was done & why, and consider looking for a better example if it fails on any of these counts... (I`m assuming you are NOT looking for a "project" or a "fixer upper")

Posted via FF MobileP.S. - new fuel filter, air filter, fluids etc. are on the list to be done after purchase, if not done by a dealer B4 purchase as mine was at similar mileage when purchased.
