Retaxing a SORNed Focus - can I drive straight away?

My Focus is currently SORNed as it's been out of condition for quite a few months. But my good old dad recently got it working again (hurray! ) and I'm travelling up to his part of the country this weekend to pick it up. I obviously need insurance and road tax before I put it back on the road, so my question is:
"If I use the direct.gov.uk website to tax the Focus tonight, can I drive it tomorrow even though the tax disc won't have arrived in the post yet?"

I know it will be technically taxed, because I've paid for it, but I've heard a lot of arguments about "MUST display a tax disc", and the contradictory "five day grace period". I'm worried that the five day grace period doesn't apply when switching from SORNed to TAXed, and is only applicable when reapplying for tax (or SORN). Plus, it's only valid for the "first five working days of the month", and right now it's the middle of the month.

Anyone have any expert advice on this??

Thanks in advance for your answers everyone!

(For any US viewers, this is a UK question. SORN is our Statutory Off Road Notification system that requires all cars that aren't taxed to be officially logged as off-the-road. Any SORNed vehicle must not be driven, parked or ventured onto any UK roads.)

Wow, that sucks, I am sorry. Here in the USA we pay tax on the amount we pay for the car, and a yearly tax (pretty small, $15 iirc). We don't have to display any thing proving we paid either.
