Possible new owner

Hi folks!

I just signed up this morning.

My wife and I are considering purchasing a Focus SES, and I'm not familiar with these cars at all; in fact, I've never owned a Ford product in all my 56 years.

Rather than investing a lot of time (which I'm always short of) doing searches here, can anyone speak to the long-term maintenance and reliability issues of these cars?
We're looking at a silver '09 SES with 8600 miles on the clock, on the lot of our local Ford dealer.
At the moment, my wife has the car for the day, using it to run errands all around the county.

The car looks like new, drives great, and has a clean Carfax report.

The salesman started at $15,700 last evening and quickly dropped down to $14,700 (he wanted us to sign on the dotted line, right there).
That price looks more realistic to me, after checking with KBB and NADA.

We had actually taken our minivan to that dealership for an oil change, started walking around the lot to kill time, and this car caught our eye.
We figure since our kids are all out of the house, and the Caravan is getting up in age and miles, it might be time for something smaller (and a little less boring!).

Thanks in advance for any info you can share!

-Doug

**forgot to mention; it's got auto tranny (for the wife; I like manuals, myself).

Hey Doug, welcome to the FF forum. I bought my focus back in 03 brand new, has about 100,000 miles on it know with absolutely zero problems to the engine. It is not rare to see people with focuses upwards of 150k miles on their car and much more. these cars seem to be pretty reliable and you def. will not be disapointed in the vehicle and the way it drives (much fun). I thought it was so much fun that I am taking my wife's focus and modding it now for even more performance.
Good luck

Thanks, guys!

Yeah, I'm thinking that I can get him down a little more.

It seems like a fairly "sporty" car, and fun to drive.

I'm currently driving an '09 MINI Cooper JCW Coupe, after owning two '99 BMW M Roadsters. MINI's are a blast!
It just about kills me even to ride along in the van with my wife (not to mention driving it!); but the Focus feels like it can be kinda fun.

Welcome to Focus Fanatics Forum. seems to be pretty good. Like all cars as long as you keep up with the maintenance you shouldn't have any problems i have 80,000 miles on my 2004 focus and haven't had any engine problems. The 2009 is a very nice car, as previously said you might want to wait for the 2012. Its all personal opinion though. Your gonna love your focus and if you ever have any other questions feel free to post them on here, everyone will be happy to help you out.

Welcome to FF forum.

Being that the new, totally redesigned Focus is going to be released in a couple of months, I think the price is a bit on the high end. I would say keep looking, and/or remind the salesperson of the impending year model while haggling. That might shave a couple more grand off the top for You.

That said, the Duratec engine(in all Foci from 05-present) is a remarkably solid little engine, and as far as I can tell has not displayed any major problems, even Here where We beat up on Our cars and see what kinda goodies We can bolt on. The rest of the car is pretty damn solid as well.

Welcome to FF!! This is honestly the best automotive forum I've ever seen. You'll love it here.

And I have a 2001 Focus ZX3 (hatchback) with 121k miles on it, bought it at 101k, never had any major engine issues. And according to all the receipts from the 2 previous owners, neither of them did either. Only major-ish things I've done were an alignment (which was due to my own fault..and sleepiness, LOL) and a wheel bearing. Other than that, she's still running solid. The best car I've ever owned!

When I bought mine I wanted a manual but wife drives her parents around and insisted on the auto.I should of fought for the manual!! Its a fun car to drive I'd recommend the Focus to anyone 96,000 miles no issues except battery and sway bar end links.
