Motor Trend Car of the Year 11

Motor Trend announced today that the COTY '11 is the Chevy Volt:
http://www.motortrend.com/oftheyear/...olt/index.html

http://blogs.wsj.com/drivers-seat/20...r-of-the-year/

Quote:
Whether you like them or not, “car of the year” awards are here to stay. And while it sometimes seems like every magazine and writers’ group hands out such awards each year, there are only a few — at most — that really matter. Today Chevrolet’s Volt won two of them.

Motor Trend magazine named the gasoline-electric hybrid Volt its Car of the Year, an award that has been around in some form for 61 years. Automobile magazine, a younger publication, gave the Volt its Automobile of the Year prize. The honors couldn’t have come at a better time for General Motors Co., which is to make an initial public offering of shares Thursday. The awards also give a boost to GM’s broad effort to revamp itself and its products following a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing last year.

Motor Trend presented its award to Tom Stephens, GM’s vice chairman for global product operations, at the GM wind tunnel in Warren, Mich. Automobile will present its award to Joel Ewanick, GM’s U.S. marketing boss, tomorrow at the Los Angeles auto show. The Volt had to beat a big field of competitors ranging from the Mazda2 and Ford Fiesta subcompacts to luxury flagships like the Jaguar XJ and Audi A8.

The Volt was first shown as a concept in January, 2007 at the Detroit auto show. In June of that year GM’s board approved the start of product development for the Volt and its Voltec electric drive system. The last GM car to win the Motor Trend award was the Cadillac CTS in 2008. It last won the Automobile award with the Chevy Corvette Z06 in 2001.

The Car of the Year prize has a checkered history that rarely fails to spark debate among car buffs. Some legendary cars have won, like the 1958 Ford Thunderbird, 1969 Plymouth Road Runner and 1986 Ford Taurus. But clunkers including the 1980 Chevy Citation and 1983 Renault Alliance also triumphed. Still, some car makers say they look forward to it and other industry awards as healthy competition and marketing opportunities.

Everyone has a price, and with all that bailout money Chevy could offer a hefty bribe...

Haha, yeah no kidding. The latest Popular Mechanics gave it their best Technological Achievement award. Too bad it looks nothing like the concept or I would have actually liked it.

WTF? The car that only goes 40 miles on a full charge and has a price tag of 40k (IIRC).

I hope this car falls flat on its face and so does GM. We should have let them fall flat on their face already.

Hahahaha, yeah lets inflate the price then have the goverment give them a rebate. That way GM makes more money and we the tax payer get screwed a second time by Obama Motors.

I will punch anyone in the face that buys this car and thinks its a good idea because their getting money back.

And you lot try to downplay hate on this site? Seriously.

Not that I like the Volt, but I can see why it could get the award [next year]; technologically, it's an important car. But I concede it's unfair to award a product that hasn't hit the market yet. I do sort of like the styling, since it's at least different...and you all can complain that it's not sporty 'til you're blue in the face, cause it ain't it the point - it's a commuter concept only. Does that mean I think it's the best idea? Hell no, I think Honda had the right idea a few years ago with the Clarity. But don't just start bashing it because it's got a bowtie and not a blue oval...bet twenty bucks half of the hate on this site would disappear if this car was called the Ford Spark.

Re 40 miles on a charge: I have to side with GM here. I live in a city, my daily commute is usually around 20-25 miles. Why the hell would I need the charge to last 200 miles? It's not a highway cruiser. I think it'd function well as an American "Smart" car and as a people carrier (taxi). Would I buy one myself? No. Would anyone else on an enthusiast site like FF? Probably not. But that doesn't make the idea any less substantial. And the harbinger of any new technology/tech package is always expensive. Food for thought.
