Second car time - What would you buy?

Well its about time for me to get that second car so I can do some more serious stuff with my car, and my wife can cart herself around town when (not if) I break mine. I have a couple of tiers in mind and im not sure which one I want to go with. It's just going to be an around town car really, I dont intend to drive it more than I have to. Its mostly just for when the Focus is down, or when my wife and I both need a car. I'm not big on the whole monthly payments budgeting thing, its the overall price that matters to me. So here's what I have in mind:

$0-2000 -
Beat up Focus, escort, old Civic/CRX, any number of other old, trashy cars that may or may not need work. Can be hard to find a gem that wont need an additional $500-1000 in repairs to get it running. This is obviously the least expensive, but do I want the hassle? And do I want to have to clean the grubby interior and such?

$2000-4000 -
Decent 00-04 Focus, or maybe an older Legacy wagon. Hard to find a stick in this price range, and I dont want to deal with another 4f27e and its damn shift solenoids. I think this is the most cost-effective option. Pretty sure this is what i'm going to do.

$4000-8000 -
Other used cars in better condition. WRX wagon or Saab 9-2x, etc. This would be a car I would continue to use for a long long time, and drive relatively often. I could basically make the Focus a track car if I go with this option, but it is expensive enough to force modifications to the Focus to go on hold for some time.

$8000-13000 -
Used really nice car, or new fiesta/mazda 2. If I want to splurge and have a nice car to drive around, and basically make the Focus a track car. Insurance will be outrageous, we are both under 25. I wont be able to afford mods on the Focus anyway. I dont think I want to spend this kind of money, but maybe I do want the nice car?

So, what would you do?

Please post your favorite tier for this purpose and suggest some cars you would consider.

I know where there is a sweet Mustang GT, I believe it's a 93-95. New paint /engine and a slew of other goodies. Red Convertible with white interior/auto. I think they want 4000 for it. Otherwise, your second choice is a good one.

When you lay it out like that i think you had made up your mind.

i think tier 2 and 3 is what you want.
and maybe more likely to choose 2 than 3...

but i think they are both good choices.

93 and 94-95 are different body styles but both still 5.0s. But yeah an Auto convertible is going to be the slowest V8 mustang you can get.

94-04 Mustang GTs with proper suspension upgrades can be a lot of fun. You could PI and Cobra IRS swap a 96-98 GT if you want a sleeper that's unique.

This is going to be an around town car so 4cyl is a must, I will consider V6's but 4cyl is going to be on top the list

This car will not be modified its just going to be a beater.

Posted via FF Mobile Either go really cheap or to the top. I say this bc inbetween you run the risk of endi up spending a ton of money anyway. You never know what problems u gonna have and if you spend 3k on a car you might be soon paying thousands more to fix things, especially if it has alot of miles. If you buy a fiesta ull be getting a new car wih all new features and if anything breaks you have a warranty. Its more expensive but in the long run imo its a better deal. U buy a 3k dollar car with high miles and age...how long you think youll keep it for? You could have the fiesta last you 10 years. I spent the money on a new focus bc i needed a reliable commuter for school. Still got it still running strong and its 8 years old.

Those are my feelings exactly. I'm leaning to the lower echelons of Focus pricing for that reason. Mostly becuase I know these cars inside and out, and I can pinpoint and fix problems inexpensively.

Ah, well I'd go with either the 00-04 Focus or an older Honda that has a receipt for the T-belt and water pump being done.
