Chevy Cruze SS

Not too bad if you ask me. I like the looks (not that particular color) and the engine/drivetrain don't sound too shabby either.

Hopefully Ford can respond with an SVT or ST Focus.

I like the roofline better than the previous version I saw. That front end looks like a jaw hitting the pavement??? Don't know about that.

It'll be like the Cobalt SS (supercharged and Turbo versions)...every wannabe will have one and think they're driving a race car. Other than the rant, it doesn't look too bad.

I like it, even tho it uses the over used chevy grill. Really all chevys have to have the same grill? But the preformance stuff looks pretty cool too.

The more practical solution would be a Super Sport version of the Cruze. That entails suspension mods, of course, plus requisite trim upgrades and a high-pressure version of the 2.0-liter turbo along the lines of the 260-horsepower unit that powered the Pontiac Solstice GXP/Saturn Sky Redline and the coming 255-horsepower Buick Regal GS.

Hey, Motor Trend is continuing their path towards becoming the American autobild.de site of photo-chops passed off as some "concept".

The updated Delta platform on the new Cruze already has an excellent starting point for a performance model in the previous Cobalt SS Turbo which is still very similar in the mechanical bits and is one of the best balanced cars for performance/braking/handling/ride for the money. Now they have a car with a nicer interior, different if still subjectively bland styling, and some small changes like the Watts-linkage rear axle that may offer slight handling improvements. They could easily have a performance winner just by transplanting the powertrain and underpinnings from the current Cobalt SS but I'm most interested to see what they have in store for the appearance.

The regular Cruze has grown slightly on me (in that I don't find it as hideous anymore) but some things like the rear end design and tail lamps aren't well thought-out and don't fit with the rest of the car in my opinion. Considering the current Cobalt SS lapped the Nürburgring faster than the new Focus RS (which is about the closest we can get for a direct comparison since they aren't sold/tested in the same market), Ford will have their plate full trying to get a new Focus to outperform a well thought-out Cruze.

My next performance compact may very well come down to who gets one to market faster. I'm waiting for a new ST/SVT/RS version of the Focus, but if Ford takes too long or it doesn't perform as well if GM offers an improved SS and said SS looks way better than the base model Cruze it would be a tough choice. What I'd really like to see is a Buick version of the new Opel Astra in OPC/VXR trim if they can keep the weight down. That car if offered here in a couple years will probably be the one to get compared to the next performance Focus.
