Thinking about a Focus ST

So I've never owned a focus before, used to ride to lunch in a coworkers early zx3 several years ago, and always kinda wanted an SVT but it never happened. Right now I have a Ranger that needs to go (need to seat more than two) and I'm debating what kind of used car to replace it with.

A brief history, I'm 31 now and in my late teens and early 20's I went through several sport compact/performance cars including an 89 Mustang GT 5.0, 93 Eclipse GSX, 97 GTI VR6 (Drivers Edition), 2000 GTI VR6, 2002 WRX wagon, and more recently had a newer Mazda 3s. When I sold my Mazda to get my Ford Ranger I thought I wouldn't miss it that much but it was a pretty fun car despite not having a ton of horsepower.

Now I'm looking around for something that can seat more than two people as that has been a major problem with our truck. My wife and I have to borrow a car from her sister when we need to take anyone else somewhere and a 2wd pickup is probably the least enjoyable thing to drive around in the snow.

I've found a 2005 Focus ZX4 ST with only 19,000 miles on it - the dealer is asking $8,900 for it but I'm sure there's quite a bit of room to move there despite the low miles.

I know asking on a Focus forum is kinda setting myself up for the obvious answer, but I'm curious what the general opinion of the ST is. I know it was somewhat intended to make up for the lack of SVT model after 2004 and it seems like a nice enough car. One other car I've always wanted was a Contour SVT but they're getting a bit older now so I'll have to put that off as a fun project down the road and not something I depend on as a daily driver. However, the ZX4 ST seems to fill some of the void left by the Contour SVT as well.

My other questions are if there is another year/trim of Focus I should consider? In the same price range (I'm looking to only spend around $8,000) I've seen a couple of the newer body styles (2008+) getting close, though I can't really say I like that style. I've also seen plenty of SE's within my price range but I feel like coming from the cars I have that the ST would feel less like a boring econobox than an SE. Having compared the 2.0 duratec to the 2.3 when I bought my Mazda 3s I feel like the extra cost is probably worth it.

I feel like the Focus is a good balance of a simple car that should hopefully be easy on the wallet, while still being a little bit fun to drive. For some comparison I've been looking at everything from slightly older "luxury" AWD cars (older A4, X-type) to sportier midsize cars (Altima/Maxima) to cheap basic transportation (couple year old budget rides - Accent, Aveo, Spectra)

if i had the option to i would get an ST with the street appearance package. But would settle for just a regular ST. Plus you get to have the fun of the 2.3.

but thats my opinion

Looks like you have done a good job walking yourself through all the options. The ST, as seen at the past 2 years for FocusFest, is almost exactly tied with the SVT in the 1/8th mile. If you were ok with the SVT performance you should be ok with the ST. Just go drive the one you found, if you like it, go for it. I would say the ST would be your best focus choice for what you are looking for. Good luck.

get the ST that's a great deal on a somewhat rather rare car with next to NO MILEAGE whatsoever!!!

I love my 2005 ST... runs good stock for what it is... I have only put an intake on it and it's a very fun car even as is!

I bought my 05' pitch black ST for $8900 exactly right out the door with 23k miles... I couldn't be more happy with my purchase still (had a 02' zx3 before the st) and everyone who rides in my car cannot believe it's a focus...

For being an 09 owner Id say get the ST. You get the bigger engine and its very fun to drive. The new style is somewhat a shoot or miss with some people you either like it or you dont. The ST sounds like a sweet deal though.

Take it from this ST owner..buy it! Ive owned my ST since it was brand new and it puts a smile in my face everyday for the last five years. I think you should easily be able to get it for 8 grand if not cheaper.

ST would be perfect for you. Same motor as your mazda but although not a rocket, but the ST will be sportier feeling. And it's a reliable, economical 4-door 5 seater so it's practical. I have an SVT and I wouldn't trade it for an ST but if I didn't have and was looking for a used Focus, I would check them out. good luck with a find!
