Rest in Peace 02 Ford Focus...this is the Eulogy

I own an 02 Focus. Its my first car and we've been through a lot together. It wasnt much, just an early base model ZX3. It didnt even have power windows.

I learned to drive stick on it. I did crazy stunts in it as a stupid youngster. Put me, my passengers, and other drivers at risk with my moronic 16-17 year old style driving. One time I tried to pass another driver on the wrong side of the road on a two-lane bridge. I almost died, I think I would have deserved it. Now I feel weird driving over 75 mph.

I tuned it a little. I learned about cars by working on mine. I'm no expert, but I learned some stuff that all men should know. I could change the oil, the breaks, and all that other matenience stuff.

I got an AEM CAI. My friend and I installed it on the day I was supposed to leave for college. My mom was pissed because we were supposed to leave at 5 and it was noon and I had all the guts of car out on the garage floor. We had no idea what we were doing, but we managed to put it together at the last minute. It was an awesome feeling as I first drove it after I put it together. I could feel that it was a little quicker and it sounded much throatier.

A few months later I got a B&M short shifter, which I also installed myself. I spent a lot of my college financial aid on aftermarket parts. I bought a full Eibach sportline suspension kit and a JBA short header. I never installed these parts. I sold the headers on eBay, but I still have the suspension kit.

It was a love-hate relationship with my car. I never appreciated it like it should have. When all my friends got Beamers, GTIs, and other cool cars, I was stuck with a shitty Focus. When all my friends got new cars, I was still stuck with a shitty Focus.

I hated how I had to use to key to enter my car. I hated how I would have to manually lock each side of the car. I locked my keys in my car multiple times because I had to lock the car from the inside. I know this would not happen if I had a remote. I hated how I had to physically roll down my windows. The crank was poorly built, it broke on me three times.

I loved how my car was always there and I loved how it got me places. I loved how I saved so much money on gas. It was a fun car to drive. It was small and nimble, and I felt like I was more a part of the car than a driver.

I got into two accidents within a week of each other. Both of them were my fault but they were very minor fender benders. This was when I was 21. A few months later I got into another accident in the rain, this was not my fault. I smashed into the back of an SUV. The SUV was barely damaged, my car was totaled. We salvaged it, but it was never the same again.

Here is a list of stuff that was wrong with my car:
* Major electrical issues with the starter
* Stereo randomly turned on and off
* No sound on the driver side
* Window crank broke off (for the 3rd time)
* 3 cracks on the windshield
* I had to rev at stops or my car would stall
* Check engine light was on
* Battery light was on
* Airbag light was on after the accident, I'm assuming my airbag would no longer work
* The car was obnoxiously and unnaturally loud.

The engine worked like a champ though.

So what killed it? None of these things. Turns out that the engine bay was damaged from the crash and wasnt as secure as it should have been. Then engine fell as I was driving the car and broke. Its going to cost about a grand to get a new engine, and I dont think its going to be worth it.

Rest in Peace Focus... I'll miss this car a lot.

Sorry to hear about your car man. But, on a positive note welcome to the site. Maybe you could get another Focus as your next car.

ah man, thats a bummer. I know exactly how you feel when you said all your friends have nicer cars. Two friends have e46's, and the other one has a saab 9-5. Although they have nicer cars, its never debated that I have the most pride in my car out of all of them.

Despite what my post countsuggests I am no noob to this site (not quite sure why it reseted) . I was here back in 03-04 pretty religiously. If it wasnt for this site I would have no idea where to begin learning about cars. The site looked A LOT different back then.

As for a new Focus, I'm seriously considering it. I would definitely go auto with power windows this time.

For sure there is no denying it. I love stick shift, but I have the usual complaints about it. It sucks to drive in traffic and I live in LA so there is a lot of that. Its comfort vs. fun, I kind of got to stick with comfort at this point of my life.

I'm considering the Focus for completely different reasons now at 23 than I did when I was 17. I liked the torq it had for its class back then and I wanted to tune it up. Now I'm looking for reliability and mpg.

Basically, I want to make a very smart choice with my next car purchase. A smart choice as far as my money and time goes. I made a pretty good choice back then by luck, even though I took it for granted when I had one. Its really a well-built car.

Well, if you must have an auto, see if you can hold off buying for a year and get the new Focus with the six-speed dual-clutch automatic manual.
