Using hand held mobile devices while driving

Here in Alberta, they are trying to legislate banning all forms of distraction to drivers(mobile devices, reading, eating, putting on make up, etc...). One local person wrote a letter to the editor and came up with "the solution". Instead of banning cell phones, we should go get educated on how to use the devices WHILE we drive. I now refer to this person as the village idiot. We should be teaching people how to drive first, not bypass this important function. Cell phone use, texting and anything other then driving is not a priority. People need to pay attention to the outside environment, not asking the wife how she is doing or whats for supper? Just what we need, go to AMA for driver training and then to TELUS for how to use the cell phone while merging onto the Deerfoot 500.

I text while I drive. I'm a textoholic though and can text without looking at the phone. If I have to look, I wait until I'm at a stop or there's nothing around me. But yeah, don't need school for it. Common sense.

the cellphone ban is stupid (at least here) people still yak away on the phones, get tinted windows so you can't see inside, or they get scared by the hands free bluetooth device when it goes off and crash their car into a ditch, (recent news article) so yea...lol - i dont have a problem talking and driving but the little bluetooth device i got is pretty nifty lol.

^^ I used to use a BT, but I got tired of people asking Me if I was in the bathroom. I wish "They" would figure out a way to make Our phones fit in Our ear, not just an earpiece.

^^You sir, are the exception. Most people can't drive even if that is all They are doing, and a phone, radio lipstick or bowl of cereal would be just too much for them... I have also discovered the textured #5 button, and can text while driving, however I don't. Here in Austin, it is illegal to text while driving, and the ticket for a first offense is $150 and goes up from there, so I'll pass, thanks.

Oh, and I'd like to hear what the 08+ owners think of SYNC...?

I don't use my phone at all when I drive. I almost hit a kid in the parking lot today that was texting while driving his P.O.S. 80's F150. Damn hicks!

Oprah recently had an eye-opening program about the dangers of mobile devices, texting in particular.

5 people died in an SUV belonging to a work associate (my place of work), because the driver was texting, failed to see a construction detour, and plowed head first (T-Boned) into a line of Jersey barriers at 75 mph. Blew a huge hole through 4 of them. Looked like a military bomb had been dropped.

Care to hazard a guess whom the driver was texting, in real time? THE OWNER OF THE SUV!

The owner of the SUV has retained legal counsel, as fallout (no pun intended) from the families pointing fingers, has already started.

Senseless, pathetic carnage.

I've been forced out of my lane several times on I-540, while my wife and I were riding my sport-touring bike. Dozens of times on my superbikes.

Cellphone users, texters, high-maintenance Bimbos and Bimbobs (you know the type, shaving, makeup, eating, hair-doing) and something else I witnessed which is the epitome of urban stupidity; watching the morning news on a dash mounted display with a TV tuner, while the vehicle was moving...are clueless.

Two days ago I had to creep forward at a stoplight because a lady behind me was texting, and creeped forward every time she entered some text! I kept from getting tapped, only because I saw her!

Texting, eating, shaving, makeuping, watching TV, swatting kids, cellphoning, navigating, _____(enter distraction of choice on underscore) has surpassed careless driver distinction, and entered squarely on dumb-ass driver distinction.

Anybody who claims to be able to do ANY, or MORE than the above, without being mildly to severely distracted, needs a reality check, or a swift kick-in-the-ass.

Whats so hard about pulling over if you absolutely must text?
When I was coming back from simi valley last year I got a call and answered, then realised it was illegal, so I pulled over. No biggie to do and it seemed to surprise the hp that pulled up behind me a short time later that someone actually did this. he left and gave me a thumbs up.
I usually like to scare the crap out of them when I see texting and such, horns do wonders and they suddenly pay attention...lol (except the one idiot that smacked the curb when I honked, obviously not paying attention at all)

Well some (probably very few) people actually have the ability to make the phone the secondary priority. I've always been a driver, its a passion. I know where my car is at all times. If it creeps, I feel it. I see the idiots everyday that are doing stupid crap while on a phone. But my point is those idiots are making people with common sense look bad. And its not just cell phones. These cars these days have huge screens right in the middle with weather and all kinds of crap. And shitloads of buttons and knobs. And now Ford has this crap with custom dash boards. Don't just blame cell phones.
