The Handling of the Focus

Just wanted to take a second and mention how much we may sometimes take the handling of the Focus for granted. I recently rented a Fusion, and another car. I gotta tell ya, it is so weird getting back into my own car!

The fusion and the other car both felt so 'floaty.' The steering was really loose as well, like the wheel was too easy to turn or something. Now, I have highly modified my suspension (SVT Springs, SVT Dampers, front and rear upper tower bars and lower tie bars, along with poly sway bar mounts), so this many be different for others.

Just saying that it was like night and day, and felt like I would share that with the community in a general chat forum.

Try it yourselves...it is such a huge difference. I would like to compare to the Mazda3 as well.

I drive a mini van most of the time, so when I get to drive my Focus on the weekend, I def feel the differance. I dont take my suspension for granite at all. The Focus is so well balanced and Ive gotten rid of almost all the body roll.

My 03 ZTS is basically stock. It's had the front springs replaced as per the Ford TSB, and it is on (at least) its second set of end links.

Even though the struts are a little soft, it is easily the best-handling car I've owned. It's a joy to jump into after nearly anything else. I can only imagine how much better a modded suspension can be. It's well-balanced, doesn't plow much for a FWD car, and it's immediately apparent just how well the front and rear work in sync with one another. Steering is perfectly weighted , I could use a bit more road feel but snow tires eat most of that up. All in all, very pleased with 'er!

Yeah, like I said, not much point to this thread, that is why it is in general Focus chat. Just such an amazing difference, I had to mention it, especially since it was in comparison to its 'successor' in the Fusion.

The handling of the SVT Focus was the single reason I bought it. Ive never driven one before, but always thought they looked cool. But working for 2 dealerships over 5 years, I had (at the time) driven just about everything you can think of. Besides the Miata, S2000 and maybe the RX-7 I drove, nothing feels more connected to the road than the Focus. Its chassis is world class, it really is, fellas. I remember one magazine (cant remember which one) who said the SVTF's chassis was "M3-like in its feel and quality". Thats an amazing compliment. All magazines who've ever tested a Focus (mainly gen 1 ZX3's and ZX5's) raved up and down about its steering feel and overall handling prowess.

As My work vehicle is a Lincoln Town Car, I am regularly reminded of how much fun it is to drive My ST with stock suspension(for now).

As a previous owner of a 2005 ST and a current owner of a 2008 Fusion, I felt I'd chime in.

My ST definitely had sharper, quicker steering than my Fusion. More communicative, smaller, lighter feeling and more nimble overall. That being said, I definitely wouldn't consider my car "floaty", but I'm in the same boat as you are with your ST - my suspension has been modded, so maybe it's not a 100% fair comparison.

I made the change for a variety of reasons, but it wasn't because I hated the ST - it was a great car. It was just time to switch things out, and with the bobbles and bits I have my car now it's actually a surprisingly capable car.
