Ford Chooses Chinese Automaker Geely as Preferred Bidder for Volvo

In the ongoing discussions as to who will buy the Volvo automotive division from Ford, the Blue Oval today announced that Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., Ltd. is its current preferred bidder. The Chinese company builds cars under the Geely brand.

If the sale goes through, Ford says it plans to retain some ties with Volvo, but would not hold any shares in the new company. A Ford statement said that any sale would be subject to Volvo having enough capital to continue strengthening its brand and retaining its Swedish heritage. The Swedish government is a partial stakeholder in Volvo.

Hummer may also soon be under Chinese ownership, as General Motors has signed a preliminary financial agreement with Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co., Ltd.

Trying to keep Sweedish heritage and at the same time selling to the Chinese?

WTF is going on, in the past the US would never allow Chinese cars to be imported in the US b/c they would stand up to our safety standards and now they are having a plant built not even 30min. from my house. My prediction is they are going to be rolling death traps like the Smart cars.

The biggest hurdle in their recent talks was over intellectual property. Ford has said they will retain some ties with Volvo in that regard. We've been a Volvo franchisee for over 50 years. Every day is a new rumor about who's buying Volvo, etc. Geely has been the front runner for sometime now, this isn't "new" news, and I honestly don't expect it to be a bad thing if the sale is approved and goes thru.

Tata owns Jag and Rover now, and they haven't turned them into "deathtraps", and lets face it, India isn't exactly known for their high quality of automobiles. I don't see the safety of a Volvo changing either.

Yes but when you think safety in automobiles, Volvo is the one that comes to mind first.
Then when you think junk or "deathtraps" you think the Chinese vehicles.

So you are combining what is seen to be the best with the worst. Now what does that spawn?

It spawns speculation a lot of misconception, I think.

Did Volvos get "unsafe" back in '99 when Ford bought them? I mean at that time Ford surely didn't have the safety record or reputation it does today, right ? Fords are safer today because of Volvo, so who's to say Geely isn't going to take advantage of the purchase to also improve their own products?

Volvo is hurting big time. They're bleeding red every day. Geely has the money and resources to keep the company afloat. To me, them buying Volvo sure beats going the way of Saab.

There's really been nothing but positive press about Tata's influence on Jag and Rover since the purchase. Tata makes some true boxes for their home market, but if anything, the quality of Jag and Rover have increased and their products are getting generally great reviews.

Believe me, I'm not a huge fan of the Chinese. I'm not happy when any company has to get sold off, regardless of who the buyer is. But they're the only player in the game at the moment and I think Volvo's only solid chance of staying in this market and being a viable and profitable car manufacturer.

I'm not saying the safety of Volvo will actually drop but I can say I expect the cars will not stand for the same quality they have now. I'm not only against the selling to a Chinese company b/c of fear of quality drop but also (even though a plant being built in the US) we are sending MORE money to a foreign country.

Hell the same article says they are selling Hummer to China too, now the Hummer quality has always been crap. Now that is in the hands of the people (who in my opinion) will only do JUST enough to pass a safety test its going to get worse. There was a reason for such a long time that Chinese auto makers were not allowed to sell in the US.

To them it's all about the profits. They will cut corners all over just to pass the the required tests like focusin mentions.

Sure it beats going away like Saab but in some cases if the brand becomes ruined because it's still alive I think it's better off dying high

Jaguar and Rover improved drastically after being purchased by Ford. Quality study after quality study reflect that, as do their JD Power's ratings over the years. Are they perfect today? No, but it's a night and day difference from the POS's they used to be known for.

WHO CARES?!!!

mazda was part of Ford which means - mazda 2 0 ford fiesta
mazda 3 = ford focus
mazda 6 = ford monde
mazda 5 = ford c-max

The same thing is with volvo.

Or any automobile group like VW.

Subsidiary sucks.

There are : ford, bmw, vw, gm (chevrolet and opel), toyota, honda, hyundai, (chrysler have fiat or mercedes parts), renault-nissan, peugeot, fiat, mitsubishi, porsche, subaru, suzuki.
So around 15 true manufactures!!!!!
I hate cars like AUDI or Lexus, more than 50% are VW or Toyota parts!!!

Imagine Ford buys BMW and next BMW 5 Series have Ford's EUCD platform (new Mondeo)

What company isn't about profits? I really think you are not looking at this objectively. The market will decide if Volvo is successful or not, if the sale indeed goes thru. Sweden still will retain a stake in the company, as will Ford. I don't see either of them letting the quality or safety slide. The damage to their respective reputations would be hard to overcome.

GM ruined Saab, they have no one to blame but themselves. Ford has had a much better track record of actually improving companies they acquire.

Our big concern from a dealership level is what's going to happen with the A and X & Z plan buyers. There's tons of speculation about how Ford is going to handle that situation. We're in metro Detroit, and I would say that 80-85% of our sales are to people with employee/retiree plans.
