Top Speed

What is the general top speed performance of a Focus? SAFE top speed. With basics like intake, exhaust and headers, and the big toys like turbos or chargers...

Is 185 possible? Any suggestions on parts and manufactures?

Just a guess here. You're probably looking at a minimum of 450 hp. You had better plan on a full tube chassis (you did say safe). Basically just find a good spec. sheet on a NASCAR stock car and adapt as necessary.
You probably also need to consider major body reinforcements. Those panel do weird things at those kinds of speeds and a minor change in airflow can cause major handling issues.
Again, you are basically looking at a race car to drive on the street.

Are you really serious?

nah i think you can do it w/ less power than that, it will just take longer to get there, and youll need a custom gear set, lots of friggin traction, and a good deal of over all down force would be good i think too(if you were say driving this fast for a good amount of time and didnt want to lose control)

Got some underbody and paneling reinforcement specs last week and a DOT approval list. The 185 was pure curiosity since this will be the first Ford I've ever worked on. Just tryin' to push this project to the limit with any and all high perfomance advice. You tell, I build!

I came up with the number by comparing to a NASCAR spec. car. These cars w/ the restrictor plates typically run around 450-500 hp. They run an honest 190 mph. This is timed, not by a speedo that is off by up to 5% (almost 10 mph.).

These cars are also very slick aerodynamically and they take full advantage of the wind tunnel when developing a new body. Only the hood, roof, and trunklid have to fit the template. It is true that they weigh considerably more, about 3200 lbs. I think it is. You really need to consider the appropriate safety equipment if you are serious about this. Otherwise you are riding a 4 wheeled hand grenade!

Horsepower needs go up exponentially with speed. I think it only takes somewhere around 11hp to move a small car at 55 mph on level ground. Now think how much it would take to move the same car 110, lots more than 22hp. Just as the horsepower increases exponentially w/ speed so does drag from the tires and air.

Also chassis setup is drastically different when driving at high speeds. The shocks are stiffer, the springs are stiffer, the caster/camber changes, and the toe-in can even be different. Remember, you asked about safely.

There was a guy that used to run the Silver State Challenge in Nevada. He drove a '69 Camaro that was basically a Winston Cup stock car with the Camaro body. The car had a 396 Chevy that was either s/c or nitroused. The detail and worksmanship on that car were something else. He probably had $75,000 in that thing. Richard Holdener also ran a Mustang in the same race. I think he averaged 186. The car had a blown small block Ford, so I'm sure it was well in excess of 400 horsepower.

For the record, no nitrous will be used.

Just for what it's worth. I've been considering a swap of the AWD Escape running gear into a tube chassied Focus for a while now. Still checking into motor combos. Definitely thinking FAST.
