Insurance company "totalled" my ZX3, should I buy it back?

6 months I've had my 04' ZX3 and already I have put 12,000 miles on it. I've never had a car more enjoyable to drive or more practical. Then I hit a deer...rather 3 of them. Hood, grill, windshield and both airbags. I'm thinking $3k in damage, but they value it at $7k and total it. They give me the offer to buy it back for $5,400 or total it at $6,400(I paid $6,500 for it).

I'm thinking buy it back. It's got the fairly rare 2.3l with 70k on it. It's a great charcoal color with the nicer black interior. It took me awhile to find a ZX3 that wasn't beat to heck, with high miles and I think the 2.3L is much more zippy. Other than the windshield the car drives like it did before. The radiator does appear to be pushed back a little, but nothing is leaking. Putting a $300 windshield in it and flattening out the hood will give me a great car for $1,300. I might get a new driver side air-bag too if I can find a good deal on it. The car still looks pretty good too. I might post some pictures later to show how easy it is to get $7k in damage done to a Focus.

So if it has a salvage title what do I have to do? Just have the DOT inspect it? Can I still insure it for liability and will this affect the cost? Or should I just take full salvage and buy something else?

I don't live in US but here's an advice from begginer-
If you can repair you current Focus it's great but keep in mind to check the whole suspension, you know, MacPherson strut suspension. You said - Other than the windshield the car drives like it did before - so I guess damage is not totaly huge.
You have 2.3L engine which is great so I would repair it.

Buy it back for $5400? Buy backs are usually only a few hundred. My brother's just last month was totalled, and he bought it back for $300, plus they gave him $2800. I bought a mustang back for $250. You might want to check into that again.

Naw, he worded it kinda funny. He gets $6,400; or the car and $5,400, so the buy-back is $1,000........

honestly, i say total it!!! u got what you put into it! and you can pick up another for about the same price. only reason i say don't buy it back is because of the salvage title it will have. resale will be crap!! and you may be able to buy a regular 2.0 for a couple grand, then turbo it, then u'd be sitting pretty w/ a 250 whp monster for 5k! just IMHO though.

In that case definitely buy it back. I'm in the process of repairing my cousins "totalled" 00 ZX2. They were gonna give her $2,500 for the car, or let her buy it back and still get $2300 for it.

So far she needs a new control arm, tie rod, fender radiator and radiator support. Oh and the hood. Well worth it, even if she sells it.

For $6400 I'd take the money and go find another, or plunk it down on a new one. That's almost half the cost of an '09/'10 if you find some incentives.
