Should I Buy This Wagon?

Hey guys. So I don't know if this would be a forum for this so mods please move if ya need to.

Okay here is the deal. I own a DJ Service and I am a focus enthusiast. I currently own a 2003 ZX3 Zetec 5spd, that has a decent amount of mods and I love it. The only problem is that I can no longer fit all of the equipment in the hatch.

I found a 2000 wagon. It has a Zetec and an auto with 138k. Has power windows and locks, cruise, and A/C. Its exterior is a little rough, has some rust in the rear rocker, but seems to be surface rust.

Okay here is where the car scares me. It needs new tires, which I have a set of 16" rims with good tires sitting around so no big deal. The exhaust has two hangers rusted off, but the exhaust is there and works, so not a huge deal. Now the motor issues. I love my Zetec. But this one has a CEL, which they said they will run monday. But the car idles really rough, and has some serious hesitation off the line, like when you are at a stop light and it turns green and you go, and it hesitates pretty bad till it hits 2300-2600. In the upper RPM range it seems to run fine though. It starts right up and doesn't seem to burn oil.

Okay with all that in mind, here are the things I know need replaced. It needs a new drivers seat cause the back rest is toast. Local junk yard has it for $12, so no biggie at all. The car needs a new windshield, cause this one is cracked through side to side. That should be about $80-90 cause I can get a used windshield from the junk yard for $30. The exhaust needs fixed and the body work I can do, but will probably be about $100 or so in materials. The body is about 6-7 out of 10.

Okay so here is the prices all added up, and please tell me if you think this is a good deal.

Car out the door - $2380
Misc Costs- $ 225

Total- $2605

Now add to that what ever you think it will cost to get the motor running good, and tell me if its a good deal.

When I went to look at the car, the sticker price was 2950 (way more than I would pay). After haggling with them a bit, they came back to $1990 and after tax title yada yada it came to $2380 out the door.

After talking to the salesmen, they are willing to run the CEL, in their shop and see what it is. (They are a GM dealer). The car starts fine and kind of shutters in Idle, and hessitates off the line. But it seems to run fine past idle, so I'm thinking its probably in need of plugs and wires, maybe a coil, probably an airfilter, and PCV valve. Maybe an O2 sensor or something (cause of the CEL?).

They gave me the carfax for the car, and it is very clean. A 2 private owner car, and never in an accident, so it seems like it could be a good deal, and it wasn't like a delivery car that got totally beat.

I NADA'd the car and this is what I got:
Rough Trade:$1,300
Average Trade:$1,975
Clean Trade:$2,525
Average Retail:$4,300

I KBB'd the car, and the values are with in about $300 or so of the NADA give or take. So they look like they will let it go for the average trade.

I really need the wagon for the cargo space. I have a whole lot of DJ gear to get in it. I am planning on keeping my hatch, but I think a wagon would be a killer way to get another focus and be able to get all the gear in it. I am looking for one on the cheap, but still in good shape. I would like to find another 00-04, so I can have the same front end to be able to swap parts back and forth.

if you are going to put your gear in there. I would seriously think about a security system, and some tint for your whole car.

Yea that was already thought of. I have a viper system sitting in the garage that can go in it, and every one of our cars gets tinted first thing. The gear hauler would be getting 5% all around.

The price seems a bit high to me given the condition of the car. But then prices always seem high when I'm buying and low when I'm selling.

I'd certainly want to know what that CEL was about, and hopefully get that fixed. I'd also have a mechanic not affliated with the dealer give the car a close look.

Yea I told the dealer when they run the CEL, to not clear it or I wouldn't consider it. So this way I could go read the code via the little Trip Computer trick, and I have my hanes manual so I can check the code for myself. At least this way I'll know for myself what it is. I got under the car and checked it out pretty good. Body is a bit rough, but the brakes look decent and felt nice, the springs looked newer, and the struts/shocks looked to be in good condition. The car ran well, other than the hesitation off the line. But after doing some more research, I have found that the dealer has had this car for almost a month now, and I think that this car is rough enough, that no one (except for a focus enthusiast) would find the car desirable. I think between that and the fact they won't get anything for it if they take it to auction, that I can get them out the door for less than 2K.

Yea I'm getting really anxious to find out what the code is. I have this feeling its just a sensor, and that the car is in need of a tune up, and once both of those are done it should run like a champ. I mean there are tons and tons of great running zetecs out there with far more than 138K right? That motor should have at least another 70 in it right?
