What's it worth? 2002 SVT w/ 23K Miles...

So, after having my girlfriend pick up an SVT halfway across the country (with all the little quirks that it had upon purchase)... I have found another, for nearly 1/2 the price.

I'm not going to get too specific, as I hope to drive to check the car out tomorrow... but it's a 2002 Vermillion Red SVT, with 23K miles. It has an aftermarket bodykit all around, aftermarket stereo, and otherwise is listed as stock. Seems to have the cold weather package, sunroof, and possibly the HID's. Non-EAP.

The biggest issue, is that the clearcoat is bad... sitting in the sun, I assume. Not sure how the interior will look.

He's asking $3500. I'm half tempted to buy it, have the skirts and bumpers swapped over from my 2003, get it painted, and sell my 2003 with the bodykit on it instead. Not that my car has high miles or much wrong with it (32K) has a couple dings and a dent in one rear fender.

OR, just buy it and flip it on eBay. Even though it needs the paintwork, it's still got to be worth more than $3500 with 23K miles?! Am I wrong? I know it's late at night, but geeze...

Seems to be that you should be able to flip it for more than $3500 on eBay, but then again, sometimes the "sure bet" marble doesn't always land where you expect it to on the grand roulette wheel.

hmm 3500 for an svt with 23k sounds too good to be true but its no reason not to look.

Okay, checking it out at 5 tonight. Anyone have a month-long subscription to CarFax so I don't need to sign back up for it?

Supposedly, clearcoat is bad because decals were installed (along with the ricer body kit) and when they were removed, the clearcoat went with them... not sun damage after all.

Anyone know if the factory SVT front & rear bumpers, and sideskirts, are still available?

Any rough estimation on paint work? If it was decals on just the sides... maybe I could get away with just the sides and bumpers... if the paint match was good.

I'll let you guys know how it looks this evening... we'll see!

good luck, hopefully its not salvage...The price already raises a huge red flag to me. Make sure you do all your homework as I imagine you will. Sometimes things that looks to good to be ture will be just that...too good to be ture.

There must be something screwy with the car, or else they are stupid and desperate to sell it. It could also be that nobody wants to buy it cause of the body kit. Curious how this turns out.

Yeah, I'll get the VIN and run a CarFax... and be sure to check all the body panels, etc. for indications of repair.

I'm thinking that between the body kit and the necessary paintwork... it could be enough to deter most folks from buying the car.

Another fun thought occurred to me now: just buying plain ZX3 front and rear bumpers, having the paintwork done, selling my less-molested SVT, and having a sleeper.

Hopefully I'll be able to check it out tonight... will keep you guys posted.

From what I've heard, Carfax is far from complete. So I wouldn't go based on a clean Carfax alone.

Sounds like a screaming deal if it's in decent shape. Too good to be true? Let us know how it works out.

I certainly don't see why you'd keep this one and sell yours, unless you want the extra cash this would likely yield.

You got that right in regards to Carfax. It's a decent tool, but definitely doesn't replace a GOOD used car inspection by someone qualified. Carfaxes don't show damage that's been done and simply not reported to an insurance company (or data pulled from police reports.) I've seen many "clean" Carfaxes on cars that have had thousands of dollars worth of repair. Owners simply didn't report the claim, so Carfax has no data to pull. To me, one of the most overhyped products out there today.
