New Focus...denied!

Saying my wife drives a deathtrap is like saying that saying alcohol could impair your ability to operate machinery. Its all a hoot until someone looses a spleen, which of course they will.

My wife's '95 Dodge Neon is, quite technically, a miracle of biblical proportions in its ability to still be running considering everything thats wrong with it. It leaks gas periodically. It has electrial issues. It leaks oil. Power steering fluid to the tune of a quart per day. It has transmission issues. Occasionally it backfires. I could go on, but you get the idea. Naturally we've been planning on replacing it with another Focus come income tax time when my SVTF is paid for, unfortunately necessity is the mother of all time-table accelerations.

Her battery went out. $80 later, she had a new one. Then her alternator went dead. What?! Damn Dodge engineers...I curse thee! Of course I don't wanna, particularly when they tell me its going to cost me $350 on a car thats worth $600 tops. So said fudge it, lets go car shopping.

I get off work at 3pm and, for the next 6 hours, we drive from dealership to dealership. After hours of getting picked by different vultures (usually the minute we pull into the lot) we wound up at the Ford dealership, the very same dealership I got my SVTF at.

They've got two '08 SES 4-door Red Focus' sitting on the lot, both with 34K on them, priced at the "no haggle guarantee" price of $13,900.

Riiiiiight.

So I proceed to haggle on the "no haggle guarantee" price with salesmen. Naturally he comes down a bit and, 5 minutes later, we reach what appears to be his bottom dollar price of $11,625...which somehow includes my wife's Neon. Fine, take it. But I'm sure you can do a bit better.

He can't.

Or so he says. He proceeds to show me the "invoice" and paperwork "proving" they've got $11,200 in the car, but he won't back off his price. Now I know how these wolves work and he can surely do better, but he's crossing his arms and trying to give me a song and dance about the economy, the post-cash-for-clunker "demand" of the Focus, and even invokes the holy name of Obama...but no more discount. I'm close, I can feel it. The bobber is bouncing up and down, but no fish on the line.

Frustrated, I left. To paraphrase Jeremy Clarkson, Used car salesmen are best avoided like you would avoid unprotected sex with an Ethiopian transvestite.

Maybe I should have. Nope, I went to the biggest Ford dealership in Tulsa. Maybe I should have taken the bait, but my gut tells me they could have gone lower.

My understanding is that the supposed "invoice" they show on those cars is not actually showing the profit. When I bought my SVTF, they showed me a invoice of $12500 but sold me the car for about $10k (plus warranty). When I asked later, the salesman told me the invoice was padded to show what they had including trade as if they'd actually paid money out but, in reality, didn't. The actual "bottom dollar" was lower than the phoney invoice.

Is that true all the time? Honestly I don't know...but my gut (along with Autotrader and Kelly Blue book) tells me they could have gone lower.

My wife and I got our foci's from there, and didn't feel pressured at all to buy anything. Look at their website to see what they have available.

Well...yeah! Two different crowds, so often if you want to share a story, you need to post it on more than one forum. Nothing new there.

Wow! Killed that in a heartbeat! Guess they really don't want links to other sites on here? :)

Dude, your story telling is awesome. I'm also SURE they could've gone lower. Thing about the economy is YOU'RE the one that is going to help it! Not them! Tell em' to shove it on that crap!
