Basic questions from new owner

Hi All,

I just bought a 2005 ZXW SE and I have a couple of questions. First, how many kms, on average, is everyone getting on a full tank of gas? Say when the Low Fuel warning light comes on.

Second, my dealer has diagnosed my rear wiper malfunction to a faulty GEM. Any insights on this module would be greatly appreciated. Is it a rear-wiper only module or is it a multi-purpose black-box that controls many other functions, where is it located and the killer, how much is it worth?

Third, would it be safe to use the P185/60R15 snow tires from my previous car even though the Focus presently has P195/60R15 tires. If I understand the numbers correctly, 195 vs 185 means the snow tires are 10mm narrower than my all-seasons. Is this a big difference in the tire world?

And last, there is a small black plastic box, right next to the coolant overflow tank, on top of what I think is the timing belt cover that is held closed with electrical tape in my engine compartment. I somehow doubt the black electrical tape is OEM. Can any one help me identify this component:

Thank you all in advance for your time and insights,

Marc

P.S. First time I try to insert an image; not sure if it'll work.

Sorry,

My pic didn't work. Maybe you can see it this way:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fi..._SE_engine.jpg

It's the thin black box right next to the coolant tank.

Thanks,

Marc

Welcome. The only question I can answer is the third one. I'm not sure where you're talking about in the picture but unfortunately electrical tape is pretty common in the Focus' engine bay. (Yes I guess you could say it's OEM because the car will come like that.) But none of the stuff under my hood has caused any problems. But again, welcome to FF. Hope I can be more helpful in the future.

I usually fill up when I'm half empty, but I get about 200 miles for a half tank, so I would be willing to bet that I could get 350 miles until the low fuel light came on. Not sure what that would be in kilometers.

Hi,

lightning2nd, thanks for the welcome. Look forward to "talking" with you.

kjsoccerdude, thanks for your input. Although I had noticed a fair amount of black tape, mainly on wiring harnesses, this specific tape job looked even more home-made than the rest. Ive put the image on a hosting site and have highlited the mystery part. Maybe that'll help:

BlackHayze, thanks for the info. I'm getting roughly 360 kms before my Low Fuel light comes on, which is only about 225 miles, so that'll need some looking into.

Thanks again for your help, this place will be fun!

ATX or 5-speed?

225 miles before the light comes seems a bit low, even for straight city driving. In heavy city driving with the A/C on. I can go 250 miles before the light comes on, and I have an ATX and that shitty 10% ethanol gasoline.

Hi Brindfan,

"In heavy city driving with the A/C on", yep, that exactly what I do and I also have an ATX. I've only gone through 2 tanks of gas since buying the car so I'll keep tabs on it and see. Thanks for your input, hopefully, as more folks chime in, I'll be able to figure out an average mileage and see how far off from the norm I am.

Welcome!

In my 07 mtx, I can go well over 400 miles per tank with my daily 8 mile, suburban commute. The 07's were tweaked for mileage, and the manual transmission makes a huge difference -- oh, and I drive like I've got an egg strapped to the bottom of my right foot, courtesy of learning to drive during the 'Oil Crisis' of the '70's and my father's unrelenting 'guidance.'
