Used car purchase: Which Focus engine is best?

I am looking at purchasing a used Focus in the 00-02 range. I've looked at a couple and still looking. Is the 01 SPI motor really something I should stay away from?
One I looked at had 147k miles, needed a trans,5 spd. I am checking into prices for reman trans and clutch.
Another car, auto w/zetec motor, 131k miles. Trans wasn't real responsive. didn't seem to have much power. Could have just been this car.

My question is: are the Zetec that much better or is an SPI ok for a daily driver? Cars I'm looking at are in the 100k-150k mile range.
Thanks

I would go with the Zetec myself.

Zetec with at 5-speed. And you will be glad you did. A Zetec with an auto isn't much better than the SPI with a manual. SPI with an automatic... is pretty slow.

There is one I will probably look at tomorrow with a Zetec and manual. The clutch has me worrying though. It has 125k miles on original clutch. He says its fine. How much longer should I expect an OEM clutch to last? It's not going to be hotrodded, just a daily driver.

The Spi is a fine motor for a dd. My dd is an spi auto and it is just fine and gets great gas mileage. and it's faster than quite a few other 4 cyl cars i've owned.

This is not really the forum for this discussion. Tech chat is for people who need repairs, or repair advice basically. Ford Focus, and General Car Chat is where I'll move it to. You'll get a lot more answers there as well.

As far as me, I'd go with a Zetec too. There are inherent problems with each engine, not to scare you away, just a few things to be aware of. Zetecs, for example, can burn up the fan wiring harness if someone removed the heat shield, or the wiring is not secured properly. Both Zetecs and SPI's can have problems with the thermostat housing, and metal thermostat housings have been manufactured for the Zetec to solve this permanently. Either one is also a very reliable vehicle. Anyone can build a lemon, but Focis seem to have few real lemons that we've seen on this site. Not unheard of, but not common at all. I'm not trying to scare you at all, just letting you know that you should be very picky if you buy the car, and tell us any problems you have. We've worked through most of them, and can tell you how to diagnose whatever is causing your car to ail.

Thanks for the move and for the advice whynotthinkwhynot.
I'm really on the fence about auto/manual and SPI/Zetec.
Is the valve dropping problem a real common affair for the SPI?

The Zetec is a better engine overall. The SPI might get slightly better mileage (I'm not sure really.) But the Zetec has more power, more aftermarket marts if you want them, and from what I've heard is more reliable.
