on speeding tickets

Need a little vent.

So I'm on north lake shore drive in chicago today just going with traffic like i always do, beautiful sunny day, my radar detector is silent, trying to get my friend downtown to the train station by 10:30.

i glance in the rearview mirror. CPD car is pulling me over. never been stopped before...i'm 21. of course, since I got my fofo, i've had 3 other cops check my plates and not pull me over... i never had anyone check my plates once when i had my pickup- maybe the car just looks sportier. I always thought I was a safe driver- I go 5 over the limit except on expressways in which case I move with traffic... i wasn't particularly watching my speed since NO ONE goes 40 on LSD... 60 was the going speed today. Well I got cited for 59 in a 40. With traffic school it's costing me $115... about what I paid for that radar detector that a) didn't hint at being clocked and b) probably made him ticket me instead of give a warning.

You wouldnt believe how streamlined it is to deal with your ticket. You check one of three boxes and pay, pay, pay. Write a check, no cash please. I can take the driving safety course for 4 hours (I'm sure it'll be on a day I have to work, too) and have it off my record- for an additional fee, that is.

I think it's pretty ridiculous. The cops all tell you the same BS- slow down, be safe. The truth is they couldn't give a DAMN about my life. If they DID, they'd let you speed- follow my logic.

Ever try going the speed limit on the expressway? Especially in Illniois, and especially in a construction zone?

I do it sometimes if I feel BRAVE. Go exactly the speed limit, put her in cruise control. See how long you last when you see semis and cars bearing down on you going 15 to 25 mph faster than you are. I literally put my hazard flashers on as I view myself as one.

I think the chicago cops should be less busy getting revenue and go stop some of the gang activity we have to deal with. that or they (cops in general) should actually stop more people so it's safe to go the speed limit and you wont feel like youre going to get rammed off the road.

... If only I remembered what I always wanted to tell a cop if I got pulled over. "look at my speedometer, it's so hard to read!!" :D
(also, i am angry that he mistook my 09 for an 08. what a dick. learn your foci!)

Since he had you pulled over and had your registration in hand or the information in front of him on his computer, I would protest. Most cops don't know jack about cars and without knowing what comes on what model, the 09 looks just like an 08. I understand that the coupe has different bumpers and a roof spoiler instead of a trunk spoiler and a few other things like no chrome of darkened chrome, but technically it is the same car.

I'm not one to commend traffic cops, but OTOH I'm one that believes in leading by example also. That being said all it takes is one individual to set the pace on a road, others will follow. If you look at it as you are saving them all money it may make more sense to you. Sure they may be pissed and honk at you, but in the end you are doing them a favor.

But stopping the gang activity doesn't bring in revenue. I got pulled over recently for speeding, when I was going with the flow as well, but he gave me a ticket for illegal tint (bought the car with it...). Its all revenue increases because the cities/counties/states cannot afford to pay those who protect and serve us. Hell, here in Tampa, they are closing parks and other "less used" types of local government operations to cut costs....

So you were or were not going the speed limit...

IT all comes down to that.

I agree with everyone on here, including "were you speeding or not" guy...

Whenever I get a ticket for speeding, I just tell myself I'm now paying $120 for all the speeding that I've done over the year('s). THINK POSITIVE about it. Or at least try to? Beats being stressed about crap you can't really do anything about.

i think it's apparent from my post that i was speeding. i just think the enforcement of the law is a little uneven. it's like a horde of antelope crossing a stream- one gets eaten by a tiger, the rest get away.

i just wish if they pull me over why cant they pull everyone over, so when i drive the speed limit i dont feel like im in danger.

meanwhile the cops break every rule of the road daily. i work ambulance so i sit around the city a lot when we havent got a call... i see them blow reds, speed, etc. and dont get me started on how unsafe they drive lights and sirens- we slow/stop at every intersection... they dont.

i guess the bottom line is i hate speeding tickets.

and the 08/09 thing was just a bit of humor- cuz i guess only FF'ers and ford dealers would know the difference. was trying to lighten my mood i guess... he didnt ask for my registration tho- just my ID and insurance card.

I thought it was funny.

And the whole lead by example thing doesn't work when 99% of the people speeding don't care about you and just see you as an obstacle that's taking 2 seconds off of there time to get somewhere.

^Well to 'pull everyone over' you have to be the slower sometimes, do you not?
