Potential SVT purchase

I've been considering trading up to an SVT Focus and thought it prudent to ask for a bit of wisdom here. I'm not entirely up to par on whether there are mechanical differences between the 2001 to 2004 production models (other than the obvious 3 and 5 door configurations) and whether or not there are any particular 'gremlins' with any of the cars for any particular years.

problems with the dual-stage intake system?

bad synchros or any transmission issues with the Getrag throughout production?

LSD's having limits to their robustness (i.e.-under too much boost, too hard)

etc, etc.

thank you

1. SVTs were built 2002-2004 in zx3 and zx5 versions. in 03 and 04 they had EAP (Euro Apperance Package) which is fully loaded. You can find 03s and 04s with the Mach HIDs, heated seats and block heater, moonroof, 9006 audiophile packages.

2. The DSI lever is made of plastic and can fatigue over time, CFM has a billet replacement for $40. The control module for the DSI is the main issue with it, when it goes out, its like $400+ to replace.....

3. Stock clutch and throw out bearing are the issues with the tranny. Some people have stock clutches and replacements that wont last more than 20,000 miles, others have gone over 100,000. As far as I can tell, I'm on the stocker at 65.5k miles. The clutch for the SVT is more expensive than standard zetecs (as fewer were made, smaller market).

4. The heated seats have a relay that can blow. Not even the light for the button will turn on for my heated seats, but Im in FL and they arent totally neccesary.

5. No LSD, its an open differential. If you plan on boosting, I would recommend an LSD and stage 3 clutch with light flywheel.

There are also stickies for this stuff in the SVT section.

Well ... I know the factory tune was updated between 03-04. As for everything else ... well the SVT has little things here and there that happen.

The Getrag is pretty hefty, but the shift cables can pop off from time to time.

Lets see ... really that is about it. I haven't had to many issues with my SVT. Other things are more driveability. Like surging at certain RPMs ... (Tune Fix) or funky cold-starts here and there.

Um ... Cat Bridge in front of the firewall breaking off (results in a rattle noise) ... get a new one or take it out.

There are other quirks here and there. Really looking for any used vehicle, check maintenance to see how well it runs and was taken care of.

Good luck in your decision.

Overall the SVT has been great and can stand a pretty good beating.

From what I hear, the newer the year, the better for the SVT. The worst part is you'll have to learn with all the crap you'll get for owning a Focus hatch, No one seems to understand the meaning of the SVT badge. The best part is the look on people's face when they can't keep up in the turns with you! And as of right now I'm talking about a dude in a 350 Z who couldn't really hold me in a tight, technical course.
