Transponder Keys

Hello all,

I have a 2003 Ford Focus and would like to get another ignition key that will start the car. I was shocked to discover that it would cost $100 to get a replacement key. I have found out that I can actually get "just the key" for $25 but I would need to program it myself since all Focuses use transponder keys. Has anyone here programmed a transponder key themselves? If so, how did you do it? I was told (and researched on the net) that as long as you have 2 working keys you can program a 3rd. If, however, you only have 1 key you will have to go to the dealer and shell out money to get a replacement. I am trying to avoid ever having to do that by getting a third one that I can program myself now.

Can I just have a spare key made at a local store? I know it won't start the car because it doesn't have the chip but will it unlock the door if I locked my keys inside? Then I can use my "locked in key" to start the car.

I hope this makes sense.
