clutch pedal spring noise

So I've had my focus for about a week now, and I've put 800 miles on it. Love the car. Only annoying thing that has popped up is when I press the clutch I can hear the noise of a spring creaking as it stretches and compresses. Being my first manual trans car, I never had this problem before... it seems like it would be common.

I got down under my steering wheel and pressed it, and I'm pretty sure it's the little 3-inch spring that pulls the clutch pedal back up. By jiggling it a little, then pressing the clutch, the noise is gone. But it comes back soon- so I sprayed it with some WD40 because that fixes everything in a man's life (along with duct tape and super glue). Will that take care of it??

Since it is under warranty take it to ford to have them replace it. I had the same problem with my 06 Focus and the spring fell out after it broke. It would cause the peddle to ride a bit lower and would not let the cruse control work and would let the clutch peddle flop a bit. Ford had the car for a full day since they have to remove the master cylinder from the car to get to it. I thought it would have been an easy fix but it was quit a ordeal for them to get to it.

We're talking about the same spring right? I can touch it with my hand if I reach up under the column lol... and it doesn't seem like it does much but return the pedal to the up position. that took an entire day?

Yep, it's the retention spring for the clutch pedal. It holds the clutch pedal in place so that it will not engage it, let you start the car and use the cruse control. I thought it would be an easy fix for them just to reach up there and put in a new one but from what the mechanic told me they have to go thru the fire wall and remove the whole master cylinder to get to it. I would have to put my foot under the pedal and pull it up so that I could use the cruse control and if I wanted to start the car in neutral I would have to make sure it was in the up position until I got it to the dealership and had them fix it.

oh jeez, thanks for the info. At least it hasn't made any noise since when I created the thread, but if it starts I'll definitely bring it in for service... I have a 100k warranty so it has some time to break lol.

Mine makes this noise, too. It vaguely reminds me of the quality of sound you'd have coming off a cheap screen door.

Mine too... my dealer could never fix it tho... it's hit or miss whether it makes the noise or not.

Well at first I thought it was my chair making the noise, then it started to get worse and that when I found out it was coming from the clutch pedal. I thought no big deal until one day I got into the car felt something drop on my foot, and then I saw it was the small spring that holds up the pedal.

At least you have the warranty so I would wait until it makes the noise on a regular basis then bring it in.

Mine made the noise within the first week I had my Focus, and then the spring promptly snapped. Nothing bad happened, other than that the pedal is a little easier / smoother to operate. The dealer told me they replaced it, but you can still see that it isn't there. I honestly like it broken a bit better...
