Acura TL = Waste of money

Well besides the new look of the 09's which is a love or hate thing, after reading a comparo MT did againts a Audi A4 in their latest issue, I have come to recognize what was a decent buy back in the day, to now an overzealous waste of time and money. Acura....what are you doing. The new TL does have its good points, its currently the most powerful acura car, and has good numbers for a v6 over 300hp and 280 ft/lbs of tq. for the top of the line Awd version. The fwd version only puts out 280hp and 254 ft/lbs of tq. The awd system called SH-awd is pretty advanced being able to supply power not only to the front and back but also vary it side to side. And being an acura you get a very nice interior with lots of tech and a decent resale value. Wow, all that power and now awd in a TL....this is awesome!!!!

Thats when you get slapped in the face and realize how NOT awesome it is. First off, the pricing has gone up a bit, and I don't remeber any TL being priced at above 40k. Here's the price list

TL $34,9551
TL SH-AWD $38,505
TL with Technology Package $38,685
TL SH-AWD with Technology Package $42,235
TL SH-AWD with Technology Package and High Performance Tires $43,235

So to get that nice awd, you have to drop down over 42k and change. To me, that seems alittle steep for an acura, especially TL after considering what you can get from the Germans as far as luxary sport sedans. If your looking at the TL for mere performance.....don't even bother.

The AWD version is a dog, posting pathetic 0-60 numbers of 6.5 seconds and pulling the 1/4 well over 14 seconds. The fwd version IS ACTUALLY FASTER, posting about 2 or 3 tenths better in each test. Ok, doesnt make sense, you got this awesome awd system and all that nice power, whats the deal.

Curb weight, starting, lb (kg) 3699 (1678) | TL
3948 (1791) | TL SH-AWD

LOL are you kidding me. almost 4000lbs for a mid-size sedan, yea it has awd but almost 300lbs more?????

I'm sure theres other cars out there in the same class that are almost as heavy, but idk this just really surprised me.

Compared to the Audi with a 6 and awd, the TL weights almost 300lbs more. Who in their right mind is going to buy a 2 ton mid size sedan that is being called the most powerful audi....yet, is slower then all your sport compacts LOL. You could buy 2 civic si's, or 2 gti's etc etc. And most people thought the Amercians were crazy building super heavy cars that get horrible gas mileage. Well thats about it for the rant. I was really surprised to see the TL gain so many pounds over the years. Whoever buys this car....is either an acura fanboy, or a complete moron.

Telling you man buy a Mazda Speed 6. Stock you can post damn near 5 sec 0-60. With intake and exhaust your looking at 4.8 and sub 13.7 in 1/4mile. Might not be the best interior but it has plenty of room and only weights 3400lbs. And cost almost half of the top TL. You can get a year old one for 20,000 r under. Got ours brand new for 23k. Plus its a turbo :-). O and you get tons of looks, alot of people are like wtf is that. Complete sleeper. I love pulling up to people with windows down and let them hear the bypass valve then they proceed to look at the car and almost hit the car that stoped in front of them. Love it!

Mazdaspeed has no awd. What's wrong with the TL SH awd for $38505? I guess it depends what's in the tech package.

Ouchey

3948 lbs is v porky.

No wonder it needs 300 HP. If it had any less it would be sucked into a black hole created by its own enormous mass.

^^haha

That is just insane for a Acura. Rather buy a used NSX for that price.

I would still buy one if I could afford it. They are very nice cars, I just don't like the "grill" on the new one.

Foreign in what sense ??

Design, supply of parts, or location of assembly ?

Most modern cars are a wildly global mixture when you dig into their design and parts sourcing.

Let me just say that I used to like the looks of the TL. I thought they were pretty sharp looking...that was until this latest makeover. I think they look hideous to start. Second, like the OP mentioned, they are getting heavier. I would look at other cars more or less expensive for sure. Acura has a die hard fan base that probably keeps their sales up. The new TL is just not my cup of tea.
